Darker than Jealousy
Oh, Satine. Now, I mean this differently than your little Romeo, cursed to spend his nights writing pages of heart-felt love notes to the deceased. You've always been so delicate, so fragile, which caused all sensible men to fall head-over-heels in love with you. However, the problem with fragile things is one mistake and they shatter.
I don't understand you. I never have, since the day you came to this "wretched place" as you used to call it. Dances, routines, steps. Each so uniquely complicated, I'd spend hours rehearsing everything. But not you. Do you remember how you used to sit on the windowsill for hours muttering how you'd fly away? Yet you still were the most desirable of all of us. What came to you naturally could not be replaced by hours of training.
You know what your problem is? You can't accept life as it is. No, you wanted better than the Sparkling Diamond of the Moulin Rouge, better than a beautiful courtisan with men throwing diamands at your feet. Satine, you had a rich, powerful Duke trying to make your dreams come true. And you turned away from him for your pathetic penniless poet? Satine, he loved you. That's it. Do you know where that'll get you in life? Yeah, the streets.
You've never acually lived on the streets, have you? Never gone for days without food? I believe your greatest act of selfishness was dying. It was you, the one that took away our home. You, Satine, have caused the closing of the Moulin Rouge and sent us to the streets. It was you who caused the girls to flee, afraid of falling to the same cruel fate. Men stopped coming, you know, the ones only there for you? When Zidler could find no new attraction, there was nothing left. I hope you're happy.
