It was probably all foreordained to be like this, she mused. After all, if Kikyo and Inuyasha had never fallen in love, Naraku would have never pulled them apart. Inuyasha would never have been pinned to that tree. Kikyo would have never burned the Shikon no Tama, it would never have been reincarnated inside of Kagome, she would have never fallen through the well and come it. If, if, if.
But they had fallen in love and Naraku had pulled them apart and all of those other things had happened so that Kagome wound up in the here and past and met Inuyasha herself. She came between them. But the part of her soul that was Kikyo made her drawn to him, want him, love him. They were in love generations before she had even been born. She should have known it was futile to fall in love with something who had already given his heart to another.
She had hoped, though, somewhere deep inside, that the fact that his former lover had become nothing more than an animated corpse would turn Inuyasha's head, make him see someone who was flesh and blood and here. But all he saw was Kikyo when he looked at her. And even though she knew it was a lost cause from the start, it still hurt.
But Kagome was the joyful member of their shard-seeking group. So no matter how broken her heart, Kagome had to keep that big, sparkling smile on her face. No matter how many glistening tears she cried when in her own company, during the day, she had to make sure that she eyes shined with happiness. Because if she fell into despair, the glowing shards around her neck would become tainted.
No matter how broken and shattered she was, she had to remain shining. Her eyes, her smiles, and her shards, all had to glitter like glass.
