'Hey, Johnny?! Your girl's on the news!' Al says as i finish drinking my beer. 'She ain't my old lady, Carter. I've told you that.' I say before looking at the tv, seeing a news report of a gunfight in the recycling plant in La Puerta that spiraled into a police chase, ending with the car crashing into the LS river.
'Terry, I need the keys to your van.' I say, taking the keys before he can say anything and run out of the clubhouse, crashing into someone and knocking both of us down. 'Yikes, Johnny. I was just on my way to see you.' Carly says, making me snap my eyes open.
Before she can react, i pull her into my arms and hug her. 'You scared the hell out of me, baby girl! Almost gave me a heart attack!' I say before we stand up and i lift her up off of the ground, still holding her little body close to mine.
'Johnny, i'm ok. It's not the first time that i've gotten into trouble.' Carly says, looking right at me. Not a scratch or bruise on her and no other visible injuries, just those intense eyes studying me like she does when i tell her a story from my life.
'Don't ever scare me like that again, Carly.' I say before she brushes her slender fingers against my face. She and i have a strange bond with eachother. I don't know how to describe it and i'm not sure if i can.
'Take it inside, kids!' We hear a familiar voice shout at us, followed by a laugh. 'Shut up, Clay.' I say after lowering Carly back to the ground and letting go of her.
She's a tough girl but i worry about her sometimes.
She's still just a kid.
