Alone

I don't own Torchwood or it's characters.

Summery: Jack considers the heartbreak that is immortality with Gwen. Post-Miracle Day. One-Shot. Minor suggestions of M/M pairings (which you shouldn't be to bothered by if you watch Torchwood)

"Jack, what are you doing up here?" Gwen walked up beside the immortal who stood, looking out from the roof at the glowing city splayed out before him.

"Thinking." The Welsh woman stepped up beside him, noticing a conflicted look in his eye. A look she hadn't seen in a while. So saddened yet so...joyous.

"Anything you want to talk about?" Jack raised an eyebrow at her. "Oh, sorry! I forgot that the great Captain Jack Harkness doesn't like talking about himself!" She shouted with mock anger. The immortal chuckled then fell silent. The gazed out quietly for quite a while.

"The Doctor, you remember him, don't you?"

"How could I forget a man like that?" They both grinned, until Jack smile faded.

"He's the last of his kind." He stated somberly, crossing his arms protectively. Gwen knew just to let him talk at this point. "He has spent many, many, many years trying to find another Timelord, another chance that one might have escaped. To know that he wasn't alone in the universe. He has yet to find anything. I've come to realize that that's why he travels with companions, to relieve his pain of being alone. I've come to understand that burden he bares all too well. He's alone in space, I, alone in time, but it isn't really all that different. Alone is alone. It hurts, being the only thing to exist like you do. I've watched so many people die, people a love. While I've just sat in one place." The man shook his head. "It's hurt so much, for so long." He trailed off, leaving the woman to realize he was crying.

"Jack..." She stepped in front of him and carefully wiped the tears away. "Jack...you're a strong man, you've lived long, wonderful lives and...why are you smiling?"

"Because," he choked, a watery grin on his face. "I'm not alone anymore."

"You mean... Rex?"

"Yeah. I'm worried, don't get me wrong. I'm not sure how this happened and I don't know what will come of it, but I'm not alone anymore. I'm not alone, Gwen. Their's finally someone who I could spend all eternity with, knowing they would never die, that I would never be alone again." Gwen hugged him, letting him pull himself together. "Thanks Gwen..." The stood in their own special embrace for a long while, cherishing their friendship.

"Hey Jack?" She looked up at him.

"Yeah?"

"That was all very sentimental and such but... I don't think Rex likes men like that." She whispered with a small grimace. Jack just smiled with a mix of sadness and amusment.

"Neither did Ianto."
