Dragon Widow

A little Olive transformed his life. Theirs was a love that crossed species. She was a hero descended from the heavens. He was a baby blue dragon a year younger than her. Beyond his scaly monstrous form was a youthful prince. He was a rare breed that could change into a human at free will. They first met at the desert. He hated her at first, but was attracted to her strength. He plucked the courage with a blunt proposal. Her accepted it. She was distraught; unprepared.

When she was eighteen, the dragon youth came back to her. Shaking nerves held him back. It was clear who was wearing the trousers. He continued to love her and the children. Decades had past. He realised humans were lucky to reach a century. Chocolate hair was replaced with silver strands. Curves were now bags of bones, but he still loved her like he always did. She died a perfect death. The children left to start their own journeys, leaving the dragon in solitude.

Centuries flew by, he inherited mountains of gold like his father before him. He grabbed a handful. Like grains of sand they crumbled through his fingertips. No jewels could ever replace the emptiness in his heart. His greatest treasure had been buried long ago.
