could've sworn you said you loved me
i guess heard you wrong
and i guess i wished on a plane
and i thought it was a star
-Taylor Swift, I Wished On A Plane
Petunia-flower didn't sound quite right.
Lily-flower though, Lily-flower sounded amazing. The two words went perfectly together. Lily-flower. It rolled straight off the tongue.
So Lily got the special nickname by their father. But most of the time Petunia didn't mind. She was proud of her sister most of the time.
When Lily brought home her first painting in first year for Petunia, Petunia hanged it on her wall and left it there. Most sisters wouldn't, but Petunia truly loved her sister. Petunia would do anything for Lily. It was the two of them against the world.
Besides, it was just a nickname...
So it only bothered Petunia in the back of her mind that she was second best to Lily in her parents' mind.
But sometimes it came back.
The star of the family, Lily-flower. Our little star flower.
Hello! Petunia would think, all the time. I'm a flower too! The petunia flower? What about me? I'm first born! Hello?
When Lily preformed her first dance at school.
"Oh, Lily, you were great! Even though you weren't the lead, you really stole the show. We loved it and never saw anything like it!"
But I did that in year four! And I was the lead in it! And I was great, I was amazing! Everyone loved me. But you guys had to miss it because Lily was too young to go out so late...
But overall, Lily and Petunia still played together. They were still friends.
And then Lily turned ten. They started to grow apart and Lily would play with the odd ball on the street. Petunia was losing her friend. But no, she would think, the thoughts corrupting her. she'll be fine. Mummy and daddy can save her, can help her. Why should I even try to be her friend, to help her? She's they're favorite; the one with a special nickname. I'm not her friend anymore. I'm hardly her sister.
It may have been rash, but Petunia's heart was set.
"Tuney, aren't you going to say goodbye to your sister? It's quite a while before Christmas time; you won't see her for a while." But Petunia looked into the emerald eyes of Lily and her heart was hardened once again.
"No. She's not my sister anymore. She's a... she's a freak!" Lily looked like she was going to start crying but Petunia was feeling reckless.
"I thought you loved me Tuney. I wished on a star you did." Petunia laughed at her sister's statement.
"I guess your wish got picked up by a plane then!"
"Then I hope that plane brings it to someone with a better sister." And without another word, Lily ran onto the train.
The rain on the drive home reflected Petunia's mood. Was it really worth losing a friend over? If Petunia was a witch too... She closed her eyes, and just for a moment allowed the illusion to consume her. Maybe they could've made it worked, maybe if Petunia just talked to Lily-
But not now. It was too late.
For Major and Minor Arcana Class: Write about a character in a relationship making a rash decision, thinking with their heart.
For the Game of LIFE: your only prompt is flowers.
For the Taylor Swift challenge: I Wished On A Plane.
For the quidditch pitch: She closed her eyes, and just for a moment allowed the illusion to consume her.
Thoughts?
