Quixotic Jerk

"I want flowers."

Canaan paused in the middle of turning a page. For a moment, all thoughts of tumbling down rabbit holes, Alice, and lemon-sugar tea fled from his mind, temporarily forgotten. He looked across the room, and all he could utter was, "What?"

A smile quirking the corners of his lips, Jin inhaled jasmine and rosemary from his antique teacup. His eyes never strayed from the book in his hand. "I said I wanted flowers."

Canaan turned the page. "I'm not getting you flowers."

Jin placed the tea cup back onto the coffee table, setting it neatly in a bamboo coaster.

"They all have different meanings, you know," he began, his tone exaggeratively contemplative. "As gifts, they could be hidden messages for your lover. Take the lilies, for example - the white lilies represent purity, and the yellow, a false, but blissful happiness."

Over on the couch, Canaan made a "Hmm..." of disinterest.

"Marigolds stand for jealousy - a deadly beauty," Jin continued. "Snow drops mean hope, the roses for love of all shades." His smile turned mysterious. "It's quite perplexing, how each message can range from deadly to pure. You can really never tell by how vibrant and exquisite the petals are."

"I said I'm not getting you flowers."

Even Canaan's glare couldn't stop Jin from laughing, even as he choked on his tea, jasmine and rosemary unpleasantly backing up in his throat and he thumped himself in the chest. Still laughing, he said, "Well, I had to try."

Jin blinked as a brown package was dropped in his lap, neatly tied up with a yellow bow. There was no card, no messy scrawl across the package to indicate whatever the reason it would be doing in his lap. He picked it up, pulling back the wrapping and peeking in. "What's this?"

Canaan crossed his arms, waiting.

Brown wrapping fell to the floor. Eyebrows furrowed, Jin inspected the package. A long line of words was stamped across the top in fancy, almost unreadable cursive. Below, vivid colors bloomed in an array of petals. "A book?"

"Your flowers."
