Why?

The bright blue neon on the bedside clock were blinking three am. Inuyasha huffed out a breath and rolled out of the bed where he had been laying for an hour just staring up at the ceiling. Noticeably absent from the bed was the warmth of his mate, Kagome. He cringed just thinking of all the terrible things he had said to her in anger. He couldn't even remember what the fight had been about, really. Kagome had been talking about how her friend had been on a really romantic date and she wished that Inuyasha were more romantic. Why did she have to say that? Surely by now Kagome understood the kind of man he was and it was not very romantic. Regardless, Inuyasha had got his feelings all hurt and lashed out in the meanest way he could: reverting back to calling her names. Now, lonely and ashamed, he drug his feet across the cold wood floor from their bedroom, down the hall and into the living room. Keen amber eyes scanned the room and quickly alighted on the small frame of his mate, his love, curled up on the sofa with tear stains on her cheeks. Inuyasha huffed again as he knelt down beside her and brushed a lock of ebony hair off of her face.

"Kagome?" he whispered, unsure if he should wake her or simply carry her to bed. Kagome blinked open her eyes slowly and looked around confused.

"Inuyasha? What time is it?"

"It's three a.m." he admitted embarrassed, "I'm sorry, Kagome, for acting that way." Kagome levered herself up into a sitting position and fixed him with an angry stare. So Inuyasha continued the apology he had been rehearsing for the better part of the night. "I didn't mean to make you cry, baby."

"Inuyasha, why does it always have to come down to me leaving before you'll say..."

"I love you," he insisted, grabbing her by the arms and pleading with his eyes for her to understand. "I don't know why I am the way I am. Or why I always use the words that upset you the most, when I know how much it hurts you. I know I could never let you walk away..."

"So why am I always on the verge of goodbye before you show me how you really feel?" she asked quietly.

The half-demon hung his head in shame. He didn't have any of the answers that she needed. He had never been very good with words or showing how he cared. To him, love was in the little things. Like the way he had built them a sturdy home and kept it that way. Or how he was always quick to fix anything when it broke. How he brought home everything on the grocery list even if it meant going to six different stores. He wouldn't tell her he did that of course, he just did. Kagome watched this sad display and could not allow him to think her so cold-hearted. She rested her forehead against his and whispered, "I love you, Inuyasha, and I'm sorry too." Inuyasha kissed her lightly and then lifted her up and carried her back to the bedroom. At least in there he knew how to show her how much he cared.

End

Author's Note: That's been rattling around in my brain for a while. Most of the time I hate song fics cause if you don't know the song all you have to go on are the lyrics and you don't get much out of them. So this is my version of a songfic, hope you liked it. The song is called "Why" by Jason Aldean.
