As L's last breath was heard, Light felt the body in his arms go limp. The ebony eyes closed, and L was finally allowed eternal rest as Light stared down at the now lifeless body beneath him.
Light sat at the end of his bed, a smirk gracing his perfect features. He took the Death Note from his desk and looked at the last page triumphantly as he saw L's true name scribbled in black ink.
L Lawliet.
Kira had won. In the end, L had fallen. He had fallen in love with Light, signing his own death warrant. Somehow L had known this as the case progressed, and as Light's and his own relationship had blossomed; yet he welcomed death. He, unlike Light, was welcome in heaven, or hell if he so desired. He wasn't destined to be stuck in Mu for eternity, and for this, he was glad.
As Light looked through the notebook once again, he turned to the front page. He remembered the first name's he'd ever written, the first lives he'd taken, the first steps he'd taken in becoming Kira. No, Light felt no remorse. He studied each page carefully, his eyes scanning each and every one of the names he had written, until he reached the page that had Matsuda's name written. An envelope slipped out and fell to the floor near Light's feet, 'Kira' written on the front. Light repressed a laugh as he bent down and retrieved the envelope and slid the back open, pulling out the letter.
Kira,
If you are reading this now, it will mean you have won, and I have lost. I write this in the regret that I had not met you another way, rather than one in which one of us would surely die; we are one in the same, Light Yagami.
I live with many regrets, Kira- My parents, treating Watari as my servant, not spending time with those I should have, and just not acting 'human', as you used to tell me. Perhaps I could have eaten something other than sugar and cake, maybe I should have eaten 'normal' food.
You may think that by you killing me you have crushed me, 'broken' my heart as people put it.. but you are wrong. No, I do not feel betrayed by you. Why?
I might have many regrets, Kira;
But loving you was not one of them.
As Light's scanned the words, his chest began to ache and his eyes began to water with previously unshed tears. No, he didn't love L. Did he?
Light had created a new world, one with proper justice. Then again, what was justice without L, really? It didn't seem to exist. L had solved many cases in the past, saved victims of upcoming crimes, dealt the cards of karma to many criminals around the world; and yet Light had taken L away from the world.
Light had always felt he was right in his actions.
But as a single tear fell from his amber eyes..
He realised some things will never be right.
Killing thousands of people was one of those things, criminal or not.
