ACT ONE
1. INT. DREAM HOUSE, KITCHEN
Amelia is making breakfast in the kitchen while Meredith tries to dress Zola and Derek.
AMELIA:
Hey, what do you know about Owen?
MEREDITH:
Hunt?
AMELIA:
Yeah, he's been really sweet and..
MEREDITH:
You didn't? You slept with Owen Hunt!
AMELIA:
Yeah, once, well twice actually.
MEREDITH:
No! stay away from Hunt. He might be into you physically and he might listen to you talk, but he
Meredith grabs the remote control from Derek's mouth
MEREDITH:
(to little Derek) No Derek, don't put the remote in your mouth, UGH.
(to Amelia) but he's heart isn't there. You might have him, but his heart is taken. Just, pick another guy Amelia. And I'm only saying this because you're Derek's sister, STAY AWAY FROM HUNT.
VOICEOVER AMELIA:
What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.
2. INT. JEWELRY SHOP
VOICEOVER ALEX:
Sometimes we are aware that the end marks the beginning of a new start.
Alex is wondering around in a jewelry shop cluelessly
SHOP ASSISTANT:
Can I help you with something, sir?
ALEX:
Uh, I'm just looking at some rings, it's fine.
SHOP ASSISTANT:
Well is there anything specific I can help you find?
ALEX:
No, it's fine...really.
SHOP ASSISTANT:
That's alright sir, a lot of guys are uncertain too, I'll be right here if you need me.
Alex looks at the price tag on a ring and swears
ALEX:
fuck.
3. INT. GSM LOBBY
VOICEOVER JO:
Sometimes, we discover that the end isn't such a bad thing after all.
Jo flips through the pages of a bridal magazine, humming and smiling.
STEPHANIE:
So, how'd he do it? was is with roses? Did he get on one knee in a restaurant? Ooo ooo, did he have the chief put it in your desert?
JO:
No-, it was very logical, he said that I was the love of his life, and he's waited for a long time to find me, and he asked if I wanted to get married.
STEPHANIE:
What? he just asked? like not proposed, but asked?
JO:
un hn. he asked me if I wanted to get married, and I said, yeah, I do.
STEPHANIE:
Well, where's the ring?
JO:
there's no ring, besides, I don't want a ring, we scrub for surgery every day we have to take it off anyways, and if I lose it, he's got student loans and a mortgage already, no I'm not going to make get me a ring.
STEPHANIE:
Girl, you[re too easy on him
Apirl walks up and starts talking
APRIL:
Wilson, you're with me today, Edwards, the monitoring my patient in RM 312 today
STEPHANIE:
But, we're residents now, that's an intern job.
APRIL:
Well do you see any interns around? Go!
Stephanie quickly walks away
4. INT. BOARD ROOM.
VOICEOVER BAILEY:
But most of the time, we're never aware, that the beginning is really the end. (fin.)
OWEN:
let's begin, we've got a lot to cover today
CALLIE:
Do they really have a case?
OWEN:
They do, a strong one.
LEGAL/LAWYER1:
More than 80 patients in the last six month have come back with serious infections that's put them out of jobs and requiring round the clock care and almost a dozen are died. CDC's still investigating, but they're pretty set on declaring the sterilization process as the key to the infections.
BAILEY:
There's no question on that?
ARIZONA:
What about the manufacture? Can we find anything there?
LAWYER2:
They're being sued separately, we're suing them too, and it'll help.
MEREDITH:
So what? Can we settle?
OWEN:
That's what we''re looking at, if we go to court, the settlements going to be a lot higher.
LAWYER2:
Insurance isn't covering this one, since our sterilization department is made up of temp workers paid by the hour.
WEBBER:
So you're saying the hospital's paying?
LAWYER1:
If we settle yes, and if we go to court and we loose, yes.
OWEN:
What are the chances on winning?
LAWYER2:
Basically? none.
CALLIE:
What are we looking at then? how much to settle?
LAWYER1:
Right now? 120, after the CDC's done with their investigation? probably twice that much
BAILEY:
Thousand? that's not bad, right?
LAWYER2:
Millions Dr. Bailey.
OWEN:
Is it possible that the CDC will find us not at fault?
LAWYER2:
Probably less than your chance of winning the classaction.
LAWYER1:
If we settle now, we settle as a classaction and we're done.
WEBBER:
What are we looking at if we loose?
LAWYER1:
The last time this hospital lost a lawsuit, you all were paid 15 million each.
Everyone silently ponders the truth in the lawyer's words
OWEN:
All in favor, ay
MEREDITH:
(nods), and I have Derek's vote
CALLIE:
ay
ARIZONA:
me
BAILEY:
ay.
OWEN:
Ok then, lets settle.
CALLIE:
Wait, wait, how exactly are we going to settle? I mean, we don't, this hospital does't just have 120 million dollars laying around, we can't even afford a 20 million dollar law suit.
As everyone pauses to let the seriousness of paying 120 million dollars settle in, everyone's beepers suddenly goes of.
OWEN:
It's Kepner, 911, MVC pile up on the freeway.
Everyone rushes out of the boardroom down to the Trauma Bay
5. INT. E.R. DESK.
OWEN:
What'd we got Kepner?
APRIL:
uh, two ambulances 6 minutes out with serious crush injuries, three more about 11 minutes out, one after being pulled from under a a car, they had to lift the car to get him out. Robbins wait here, there's a 6 year old on one of the 11 minute ones, multiple fractures, and page Shepherd, kid's got a skull contusion.
ARIZONA:
Oh God.
APRIL:
Yea,
(to the nurse next to her) page Shepherd, page Pierce, page everybody,
It's all hand on deck on this one.
Owen, Bailey, Meredith, Webber and the residents rush towards the trauma bay as ambulance sirens become louder
5. CONT. EXT AMBULANCE LOADING DOCK
First ambulance pulls up and the back doors open. Two paramedics scramble to get the gurney out.
PARAMEDIC 1&2:
This one's not to bad, multiple cuts and bruises, she got lucky, air bag blew open and shielded her from crashing forward. Minor burns from the seatbelt whiplash and there might be a concussion.
WEBBER:
Okay, Wilson come with me,
Webber grabs on side and starts back toward the trauma bay and Jo hurries to follow.
Second ambulance parks and the door open revealing two paramedic almost covering the gurney with their bodies.
PARAMEDIC3:
uh, multiple crush injuries, skull contusion, lost conscious when a car flipped onto him, he's…
MEREDITH:
On to him?
Stephanie rushes out
PARAMEDIC4:
Yea, this guy was on a bike.
STEPHANIE:
Ouch!
PARAMEDIC3:
yeah, he's got massive internal bleeding and multiple fractures, and a broken neck.
STEPHANIE:
Woah
PARAMEDIC3:
probably'll never walk again, if he lives.
BAILEY:
a freaking car fell on him, its a miracle he's still even alive.
(turns to Stephanie & Meredith) Grey, Edwards, come with me
Everyone parts to makes way for them
OWEN:(to paramedic 4)
Do we know what happened?
PARAMEDIC4:
A semi flipped over on the freeway, was carrying a full load of oranges. Yeah, about thirty thousand oranges. And it all spilled out.
OWEN:
Damn, that's gonna do a lot of damage
PARAMEDIC4:
you're telling me, cars are gonna be slipping all day long.
5. CONT (2) INT. TRAUMA BAY.
Webber and Jo are pulling their gurney into the ER
APRIL:
Trauma two is clear
Meredith and Bailey comes riding in both half on top of the gurney as Stephanie pushes as hard she she can
APRIL:
Bay 3 is open
MEREDITH:
Just about every kind of injury Kepner.
(To Callie) we need you in here
As Stephanie follows into bay 3 we hear Meredith call for 3 units of O-neg
Just then Owen comes through with Arizona on either sides of the 6 year old.
APRIL:
Trauma 4's
ARIZONA:
No we need to go straight to the O.R. on this one, have Shepherd come when she's done here.
As Owen falls Arizona's beeline for the O.R. Jackson comes running towards him.
JACKSON:
Chief, I need to speak to you
OWEN:
It needs to wait, six year old with an open chest wound, I need to get in there now,
JACKSON:
No, I can't wait
OWEN:
(Sighs)
Robbins, you go ahead, I'll be there soon
Arizona goes into the elevator and the door closes
OWEN:
(Turns back to Jackson)
Alright, what is it?
JACKSON:
We should discuss this in your office, now
OWEN:
Can't it wait until after ...
Owen's words are interrupted by the sound of more ambulances arriving at the loading dock and he turns towards the door
OWEN:
There's...
JACKSON:
I know, but you won't have an ER left if we wait.
Owen for the first time notices Jackson's grave expression and becomes worried.
OWEN:
(Sighs again)
Let's go
More gurneys are pushed through the door as April directs them to open trauma bay and interns rush around armed full of blood units and IV bags.
6. INT. OWEN'S OFFICE/CONFERENCE ROOM
Jackson sighs and drops into a chair
OWEN:
A semi full of oranges just topples and spilled and we've got massive trauma coming in, so what is it that could wait?
JACKSON:
The Harper Very Foundation, have, uh...
(Looks around nervously)
Decided that in light of recent.. um... events, they feel that they are not, um...
OWEN:
Not what Avery? I don't have all day.
JACKSON:
They've decided that they won't be supporting the hospital behind this lawsuit.
OWEN:
Wha— what does that mean?
JACKSON:
It means that the foundation won't pay any of the settlement.
OWEN:
The foundation owns the largest shares.
JACKSON:
I know, I know, they've said that if we can find a suitable buyer or outside investor to takeover the debt, they are willing to sell their shares so that we can sell as a whole.
OWEN:
Se— sell? Uh. The last time we got sold, this hospital almost got torn apart for pieces.
JACKSON:
I know, I, uh, can start making some calls if you'd like.
OWEN:
Calls?
JACKSON:
Yea, um, to see if, there are any interested investors
OWEN:
No, you've done enough al—
Door opens and some intern sticks her head in
INTERN1:
Chief, uh I'm, uh sorry, Dr. Robbins sent me to get you? You, um, weren't answering your phone and, uh, she need you in the OR.
OWEN:
Tell Dr. Robbins I'll be right there
Intern closes the door and Owen turns to Jackson
OWEN:
Thank you, but tell the foundation, that we will handle this on our own.
Owen leaves banging the door behind him, leaving Jackson to sigh in the empty conference room.
6. CONT. INT. OR 2
The 6 year old is open on the operating table as Arizona works furiously
ARIZONA:
More suction.
Door opens and Owen comes in and a scrub nurse tries to give him towels which he shrugs away
ARIZONA:
Oh good you're here. (Cheerfully)
OWEN:
Do you need me?
ARIZONA:
Yeah, kid's got a ton of crush injuries and I can't get a handle on the bleeding long enough, can you—
OWEN:
No, do I need to be here? Can Karev or Grey do it?
ARIZONA:
Well, yeah, but—
OWEN:
Page one of them then, I have to go
ARIZONA:
Uh chief, six year old with serious internal injuries, not to mention, uh Kepner can handle it in the ER.
Owen doesn't wait for Arizona to finish as he rushes back out the scrub room and towards the conference room.
RESIDENT1:
What was—?
ARIZONA:
This lawsuit, he's dealing with it, we're dealing with it
INTERN2:
The infection class action?
ARIZONA:
Yeah, the hospital is going to settle.
RESIDENT1:
Oh, are we paying a lot of money?
ARIZONA:
One hundred twenty million dollars.
INTERN2:
Oh My God!
RESIDENT1:
a hundred and twenty MILLION?
INTERN2:
Can we afford that much money?
RESIDENT1:
I don't know, but the Harper Avery Foundation can. I heard that Dr. Avery rented a private jet just to fly a experimental heart in from San Fransisco last year. On his credit card.
INTERN2:
no way! Are you serious?
ARIZONA:
Focus the patient. I need more suction.
END OF ACT ONE
ACT TWO
7. INT. CONFERENCE ROOM/CHIEF'S OFFICE
Owen stares at the papers in front of him, the news is on in the tv behind him,
NEWSANCHOR1:
...Grey Sloan Memorial, formerly known as Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital has reach a settlement with the victims of their reason serious infection outbreak. Sources say that for an undisclosed amount, the 83 patients and their families have agreed to settle their class-action.
NEWSANCHOR2:
Less than a months ago, 83 patients treated at Grey Sloan Memorial left the hospital only to return with a serious, and in 11 patients, deadly infection. We are hearing reports that the CDC is finding fault with the sterilization of the surgical equipment used on the 83 patients.
7. CONT. INT. CRISTINA'S OFFICE.
NEWSANCHOR1:
After a month long investigation and arbitration, the victims have finally reach a conclusion to their tragic ordeal and can now put this unfortunate incident behind them. However, we also hear from sources that Sky-Surgical, the manufacture of this set of particular instruments that have been transmitting the infection are also being sued by the hospital.
NEWSANCHOR2:
The hospital believes that they were following the sterilization instructions provided by Sky-Surgical, and that Sky-Surgical's instructions were faulty and partially to be blamed...
Cristina watches the news from behind her desk as the phone rings
CRISTINA:
Dr. Yang,
DR. WEISS (KLAUSMAN INSTITUTE):
Dr. Yang, do you have the news on?
CRISTINA:
Yes, I'm watching, there's a lawsuit going on in my old hospital.
DR. WEISS:
Yes, there is, I believe this is a perfect opportunity.
CRISTINA:
Opportunity Weisse? This is a disaster, oh can you wait, I need to—
DR. WEISS:
Yes Dr. Yang. This is the perfect opportunity. Call a board meeting this evening, I have the perfect idea.
8. INT. BOARDROOM
ARIZONA:
Okay I'm here, why'd you call an emergency meeting, I thought we're settling, is something wrong?
LAWYER1:
No, there's nothing wrong. We've spoken—
CALLIE:
Hey, where's Avery, shouldn't he be here for this?
OWEN:
I didn't page him
LAWYER1:
(Continues)
We've spoken to the plaintiff's lawyers, and fortunately
CALLIE:
What do you mean you didn't page him?
OWEN:
Let's just hear the lawyers first.
CALLIE:
No wait, what do you mea—
OWEN:
Let's just get through this first
LAWYER1:
everyone agreed to settle right away. We just need you signatures stating your agreement.
The thick stack of papers gets passed around the conference table even though everyone is wondering where Jackson is. The last to sign is Owen and he collects everyone's papers and one of the lawyers pucks the stack up.
OWEN:
Jackson already signed his, so we're good.
CALLIE:
So is there a reason he's not here right now?
OWEN:
Dr. Avery informed me this morning that the foundation will not be providing any financial support to the hospital in regards to the settlement. In fact, the foundation is actually looking to sell this hospital as a whole.
ARIZONA:
Woah woah wait what?!
MEREDITH:
The foundation owns the majority of this hospital
LAWYER2:
Exactly. Which means that since the foundation has decided to with draw their support of the hospital and sell, there's no way we can stop them.
ARIZONA:
Wait. So then do we sell too?
LAWYER2:
You don't have to, but you have a much higher chance of finding a buyer if you do sell as a whole hospital. Whoever buys us however, will most likely insist on their own board of directors, even if you don't sell you shares, that's something you want to think about.
MEREDITH:
Wait, Bailey doesn't own any shares, Alex does. Cristina left her share to him. He's the one who decides if he sells.
BAILEY:
Now hold on, the board voted-
MEREDITH:
Cristina signed her share of the hospital to Alex. That means that even if you're on the board, Alex owns those shares. He should be in this meeting.
BAILEY:
Karev isn't-
MEREDITH:
Unless you paid him fifteen million dollars when you took his seat, Alex still owns those shares. Cristina legally gave him her shares.
LAWYER1:
Actually, that is valid. Dr. Bailey, you may be on the board, but Dr. Karev is still the owner of Dr. Yang's previous shares of the hospital.
MEREDITH:
well somebody page him.
BAILEY:
now hold on, the boardvoted for me to be here.
OWEN:
they did, but Karev is the one who owns Cristina's shares, the board can vote to add you as a new member of the board, but they can't assign ownership of the hospital, I'll page him.
BAILEY:
too.. uh.. wh..
Bailey throws her arms up, gets up and leaves the room
CALLIE:
so what, now we need to find a buyer?
LAWYER1:
yes, unless you can find a way to pay 120 million yourself.
ARIZONA:
How do we find anyone who's willing to buy a hospital with more than a hundred million in debt?
LAWYER2:
Well, the buyer would first pay off the lawsuit as part of what they're paying for the hospital. The remaining money is distributed according to shares. The Harper Avery foundation owns 67.3% of the hospital, and they would receive around 92.23 million from the buy, if they're willing to pay what you guys paid. The rest of you will get 8 million each.
everyone takes a minute to process what they just heard,
ARIZONA:
So the foundation is paying most of it? I mean we each gave our 15 million but the foundation gave 175.
LAWYER2:
Yes, essentially
ARIZONA:
well will the foundation agree? I mean they said
Before Owen could respond, the door bursts open and Jackson and Alex both comes in, Jackson has huge binders in his arms.
OWEN:
Jac-
JACKSON:
no listen first, I found a buyer, well the foundation got an offer
OWEN:
I said that we don't need-
JACKSON:
(out of breath and very excited passes one to the lawyers)
No listen, the offer is the full 260 million, we keep the existing management board, and there will be no big changes made to the hospital. They're basically buying as is.
OWEN:
What? hold on?
(everyone at the same time)
KAREV:
buying us? why'd I get paged?
ARIZONA:
Oo that's great! we get to keep-
MERDITH:
who's the buyer?
LAWYER:
what? what are the conditions?
JACKSON:
Hold on, hold on. Listen,
The buyer wants to remain anonymous for now, and the only condition is that the new chairman changes, which I am fine with, and Karev, I have no idea why you got page-
Jackson stops, confused out why Alex was there and they look at each other
OWEN:
what do you mean anonymous for now? and Karev, I paged you, you own Cristina's shares of the hospital
KAREV:
what? I thought you voted Bailey-
MEREDITH:
no, it was voted that Bailey would be on the board. You still own Cristina's share, we can't change that.
KAREV:
so what? I'm rich now?
MEREDITH:
well, actually, you need to sell your share
KAREV:
So what, Cristina left her fifteen million dollar share to me? There's no way she just gave me fifteen million dollars.
LAWYER2:
Actually, that's what her papers say.
KAREV:
so Bailey never even had a chance to be on the board, it was my seat.
LAWYER2:
technically no, the board voted to instate Dr. Bailey as the new member, so even though you own part of the hospital, you're not on the board.
JACKSON:
Wait, wait, wait, you guys need to see the offer first, there's a time limit for it.
OWEN:
what?!
JACKSON:
We need to take this offer, it's great
LAWYER1:
unfortunately, Dr. Avery is right, this is actually an astounding offer, better than I thought possible, given the lawsuit and all.
CALLIE:
the foundation agreed to this? to only get 92 million?
JACKSON:
Yes, that's actually the time limit, they gave us 6 hours to decide.
MEREDITH:
well there's no way we can say no. I'm selling, and Derek's share too
KAREV:
I'm selling, I need the cash, do I get 15 million? awesome.
LAWYER:
No, you get around 8, the law suit is ttaking 7 million
KAREV:
what-?
ARIZONA:
Relax the Harp Avery foundation is loosing more than 80 million. I'm in
Everyone looks toward Callie..
CALLIE:
Hang on, isn't this the opposite of what we wanted? We're just giving up? The point of us buying the hospital is-
JACKSON:
The buyer agreed to keep the board
MEREDITH:
We're still going to be in charge of decisions Callie
CALLIE:
Is that in the contract?
LAWYER1:
Yes, but the chairman will be someone appointed by the buyer
OWEN:
Hang on, who is the buyer?
JACKSON:
They asked to remain anonymous until further notice
CALLIE:
What-? so we don't even know the buyer?
JACKSON:
No, but-
CALLIE:
so when their chairman takes over, and veto's every decision we make and-
ARIZONA:
Callie, we need a buyer, and this one's agreed to not tear us apart. That's already a great offer. We CAN'T afford to turn it down.
CALLIE:
Do they have to buy all shares?
JACKSON:
Yes, they did say that.
CALLIE:
(throws her hands up)
Well, you're all selling.
LAWYER1:
Are we accepting then?
MEREDITH:
We are (a little gleefully)
Thicks binders are being passed around, and everyone signs in theirs, except for Meredith who signs two.
JACKSON:
Alright, I'll get these back to the foundation, and uh I guess, nothing else.
OWEN:
Are the new owners going to come uh, visit?
JACKSON:
I will have to, uh, see about that. I'm not really sure-
OWEN:
Please let me know before they are coming, I'd rather give a good first impression
ARIZONA:
So that's it?
she gets up to leave and Meredith follows
OWEN:
Yeah, looks like,
I hope nobody resigns this time
everyone laughs nervously.
(fin)
9. INT. SURGICAL FLOOR NURSE'S STATION (NIGHT)
Owen comes out of a patient's room with a clipboard full of papers and a pen, looks around and sees Amelia at the nurse's station. He walks up to her..
OWEN:
(to Amelia)
Hey
AMELIA:
hey,
OWEN:
(to the nurse sitting behind the desk)
Get 318 another bag of saline, and have someone do another echo, chest sounds are a little weird.
(to Amelia)
Have you been avoiding me?
AMELIA:
No, I've been busy,
OWEN:
yea, can you believe a semi full of oranges spilled on the freeway?
AMELIA:
Oranges spill, explains all the ambulances that keep pulling up.
OWEN:
yea, bad day to be on the freeway uhn. Hey I'm done for the day, wanna grab a drink?
AMELIA:
ugh, can't Robbins's kid need another surgery, we had to keep part of his skull in his abdomen, swelling wouldn't go done, I'm about to go in again.
OWEN:
Ouch, well, uh, I'll -
loud sirens suddenly fills the air
CODE BLUE, I.C.U., CODE BLUE, I.C.U., CODE BLUE I.C.U...
both Owen and Amelia rush towards the sound of the alarm
9. CONT. INT ICU PATIENT ROOM (NIGHT)
heart monitor beeps,
Meredith hands the charts in her hand off to a nurse
MEREDITH:
Get the crash cart!
INTERN3:
right away, doctor
MEREDITH:
Get the pads
a resident put two pads onto the patient's chest
MEREDITH:
charge to two hundred.
sound of the patient flatlining continues
INTERN3:
Nothing
a resident is doing manual chess compressions
MEREDTITH:
Charge again, two hundred.
INTERN3:
still nothing
Bailey rushes in, resident does more manual compressions
BAILEY:
What happened?
INTERN3:
I don't know, uh, he was fine minutes ag-
MEREDITH:
just started crashing, probably got another bleeder somewhere
BAILEY:
te-, I just spent four hours in the OR fixing his bleeders
MEREDITH:
Charge again, three hundred [shock]
beep beep
INTERN3:
still nothing
MEREDITH:
charge again, three-sixty
Meredith shocks the patient, beeeeeeeep, still flat lining.
INTERN3:
still nothing
MEREDITH:
yeah I can see that, charge again, three-sixty [shock]
INTERN3:
Nothing...
sound of patient flat lining fills the room
Owen comes in and see Meredith with the paddles
OWEN:
how long has he been down?
RESIDENT:
28 minutes
OWEN:
it's time to call it
BAILEY:
te- no, i just spent 4 hours in the OR on him
MEREDITH:
time of death, nine-fourty-eight PM.
Everyone starts pulling their gloves off and putting the equipments back.
BAILEY:
no, you can't just-
OWEN:
it's been almost thirty minutes Bailey, he's not coming back. Now, is his family here?
MEREDITH:
I don't know, he was brought in this morning
OWEN:
the biker who got crush under a car?
MEREDITH:
Yeah, he's the one. Haven't found his family yet, don't even know his name, wallet's probably still somewhere under the pile of car.
OWEN:
alright, let's prep him for the morgue, see you you can find his name or family, let me know when you?
Owen leaves the room, as do all the nurses
MEREDITH:
(to the interns)
well, what are you standing there for? prep him for the morgue.
INTERN5:
do we have to bring him down ourselves?
BAILEY:
no- they'll have somebody pick him up, just prep him. Idiots.
INTERN5:
Sorry Dr. Bailey, I
BAILEY:
save it, I don't want to hear it, just do it and then go down to the pit.
INTERN5:
but I'm on your service today Dr. Bailey-
BAILEY:
GO TO THE PIT BEFORE YOU KILL ANOTHER ONE OF MY PATIENTS
INTERN5:
Sorry Dr. Bailey
BAILEY:
What'd I just say?
The two interns scramble to get out of the room.
MEREDITH:
she said, PREP HIM FOR THE MORGUE THEN GO DOWN TO THE PIT.
interns comes running back like very scared.
BAILEY:
they're worse than you were
MEREDITH:
(turns to Bailey as they both leave the room and walks towards a nurse's station)
My, you're a ball of joy today
BAILEY:
I just voted to pay one hundred and twenty million dollars to settle a law suit, then you kicked me off the board, a semi full of oranges crashed today, i just spent 4 hours of my time doing surgery on a patient who just died, four hours I could've spent with my son, and now this hospital is about to go bankrupt. It's been a great day Grey, a fan-tas-tic day.
MEREDITH:
well you're not off the board, you just didn't have shares to sell
BAILEY:
did we sell?
MEREDITH:
uh... I'm really not suppose to say-
BAILEY:
oh just split it out, I'd like to know before another one of my patients dies that I'm not going to loose my job.
MEREDITH:
well we did-
BAILEY:
so you got kicked off the board too
MEREDITH:
no, that's the weird thing, the buyer want to remain anonymous, and they don't want to change a thing, well, except for the chairman. But Jackson stays on the board, so do the rest of us.
BAILEY:
that sounds too good to be true.
MEREDITH:
right, I thought so too, but it's in the contract and everything, the current board still gets to make all the management decisions
BAILEY:
wait, management is like managing the ER, or the OR, and what color scrubs we wear. Who's gonna decided research funding? or staff?
MEREDITH:
I don't know, but, I'm sure we'll figure it out, I'm they or it.. bought us for full value, they wouldn't do that unless they saw our value and they're not were going to cut out research funding, everything stays as is, you're not loosing your funding Bailey. Stop worrying, everything will be fine.
BAILEY:
whatever you say, but you'd better not cut my research.
MEREDITH:
they won't. nobody is cutting anything.
(end of act two)
ACT THREE
10. INT. CRISTINA'S PENTHOUSE
Cristina opens the door of her penthouse kicks off her heels and and takes a long sniffle of the aroma drifting out from the kitchen.
CRISTINA:
Ooo that smells great Andre, what did you make today?
ANDRE:
Tante Cristina! There was an open market today, down in the city square, and I found these great onions, and I'm making a quiche, and there's a veal and mushroom sauce and rösti to go with it, and I made this great saffron soup, you're gonna love it. Ooo, there's a great bottle of Brunello to go with it.
CRISTINA:
Okay okay slooow down, you're fiften, no fifteen year old girl gets this excited about food, let alone a fifteen year old boy.
ANDRE:
you were eating cereal for dinner
CRISTINA:
eh- you've got a point
ANDRE:
Oh and tante Meredith called, said something about a buying, I couldn't hear clearly, there were to much yelling
CRISTINA:
oh yeah, finish whatever it is you're doing, I'll facetime Mer. By the way, did you get your school work done?
ANDRE:
It's almost summer vacation, there's not much school wor-
Andre goes back into the kitchen and starts to get the diner plates out as Cristina flips open the cover of her tablet, sets it on the kitchen bar, and dials Meredith.
MEREDITH:
Hey, you're back, Andre answered when I called, said something about a mushroom rösti? What's a rösti?
CRISTINA:
I have no idea, sounds like he's baking it.
MEREDITH:
oh (she sighs) I am so jealous
CRISTINA:
(smirks a little)
I know, he's great isn't he.
ANDRE:
it's ready!
Cristina moves the tablet into the dining room as Andre goes to the kitchen to grab the quiche out of the oven.
MEREDITH:
you really should bring him for a visit, I'm ordering pizza for dinner and you get a private chef.
CRISTINA:
that's what happens when ground breaking surgeries save lives Mer, you get rewarded. Besides, I am coming to Seattle, next wee-
MEREDITH:
Wha-t! (screeching) why didn't you tell me? Oo when's your plane, are you bringing Andre? do you need me to pick you up at the airport?
CRISTINA:
Slow down, I heard about the lawsuit, and I-
MEREDITH:
Oh actually, we settle, and we're paying a hundred and twenty million dollars, and it turns out the Harper Avery foundation wanted to sell, was was willing to pay their share of the losses too, if we sold so we did, speaking of which, I heard about your nomination, you're so going to win this time, there's no Harper Avery politics to hold you back, oh and since the Harper Avery no longer owns us, I guess we can win too.
CRISTINA:
Ok Mer, you really need to slow down, take a breath. You can tell me everything when I come next week because I bou-
Andre walks in holding the quiche and brings it in front of the tablet
ANDRE:
Hallo tante Mer! Look I finally got this amazing recipe right-
MEREDITH:
oh stop, I'm so jealous right now. Cristina, stop fraughting him
Cristina and Andre both laughs...
MEREDITH:
Stop laughing, it's not funny,
CRISTINA:
It is funny. You're me. just instead cereal you're ordering pizza. Mer, you gotta move forward, not back.
Cristina keeps laughing and Meredith joins in
MEREDITH:
go eat your dinner, I've got surgery anyways.
CRISTINA:
uh yeah, anything good?, (still laughing)
MEREDITH:
No, just a wipple, we'll talk later? Oh, and text me your flight.
Cristina flips the tablet over on and set it down.
(turns to Andre)
CRISTINA:
How do you like the rain?
ANDRE:
The rain?
CRISTINA:
Seattle's always rainy, and I just bought a hospital there so
ANDRE:
and you're asking me if I want to visit your old/new hospital with you?
CRISTINA:
(a little awkwardly)
whatever, it's not a big deal. School's over next week and I can't leave you here by yourself, I can't save your life if you get hurt and I'm 9000 kilometers away.
ANDRE:
Oh absolutely, I'm not going to miss out on a chance to finally meet your husband.
CRISTINA:
(her fork clashes on the plate)
how'd you know about that?
ANDRE:
heard you on the phone with your lawyer, and I saw you wedding photo on a shelf in your closet.
CRISTINA:
hey, you tell no one about it, I'm still trying to sort it out. he's suppose to be my ex-husband. Mer doesn't even know about it.
ANDRE:
why don't you just give him another chance? you still love, otherwise you wouldn't have your wedding photo up
CRISTINA:
of shut up, you're too wise for your age.
ANDRE:
hey, I'm just saying, life's short. Just look at me.
CRISTINA:
You're 15, you've still got forever to live
ANDRE:
thanks to you, but that's not what I meant.
CRISTINA:
No, it's not. (All serious now) He didn't do anything wrong. There's nothing to forgive. People, get married, they get divorced. Or I my case, almost get divorced. But I moved to Switzerland because I got this incredible opportunity to continue my research. And It was time for me to go.
ANDRE:
But you're going back. And it doesn't matter where you are. If you love him, go get him
CRISTINAS:
Why are you giving me dating advice? You were too scared to ask the girl you like for coffee.
ANDRE:
We are not talking about me, we are... Yea we're both stupid.
(Cristina smiles at Andre and picks up her fork again)

OWEN:

JACKSON:
no, they said they wanted to see how things were running and if anything needed to be... modified.
OWEN:
modified? they said no changes right? that's why we sold? because they promised no changes?
JACKSON:
I think they're just worried about the lawsuit, they want to make sure it does happen again, that's all
OWEN:
oh, okay, monday, oh, your guy's in 3.
Jackson walks off and pulls the curtains open.
11. CONT. (2). INT. NICU (evening)

RESIDENT7:
Oh sorry, I just thought it sounded-
ALEX:

RESIDENT7:
of course, anything-
ALEX:
and get her isolated, I don't need the whole NICU coming down with this. last thing we need is another viral infection.
12. INT. JEWELRY STORE
SHOP ASSISTANT:
welcome back sir, have you made up your mind?
ALEX:
uh no, can I see some princess cut rings?
SHOP ASSISTANT:
of course sir, come this way
ALEX VOICEOVER:
sometimes, change isn't so bad, even when it comes when we least expect it too.
(Alex swipes his credit card as the shop assistant polishes the simple princess cut ring and puts it in a velvet box.)
12. INT. MEREDITH'S DREAM HOUSE KITCHEN. (NIGHT)
AMELIA VOICEOVER:

AMELIA:

AMELIA VOICEOVER CONT.

12. CONT. (2). INT. HOSPITAL LOBBY (DAY)
Doctors and nurses are all gathered in the lobby as Owen stands on the stairs ready to make the announcement. Some on the balcony, some behind the nurse's desk, some scattered all over.
OWEN:
I know that everyone's been a little on edge because of the lawsuit, and the rumors that the Harper Avery foundation not supporting us, and going bankrupt, but I want to tell everyone we've found a buyer, and they are not going to change a thing about this hospital. The board is still the board and we are still in charge of management.
everybody is all whispering to each other and talking about it
OWEN:
I can promise you, that no one is going to be fired because of this, and no department is loosing any money...
Owen continues talking and as his voice starts to fade...
12. CONT. (3). EXT. ZÜRICH KLOTEN AIRPORT (EVENING)
CRISTINA VOICEOVER:
But there are times, when change doesn't necessarily mean changing to something new, It could also mean, returning to the things we find most familiar.
we see Cristina, Andre, and the 6 other members of the board of the Klausman institute getting on a private jet. Cristina is wearing a suite and Andre is in a t-shirt and jeans as he is handing off their bags...
CRISTINA VOICEOVER CONT.
change is the definition of uncertainty, we never know what it will bring. The beginning may just be the end, or the end, the beginning.
a flight attendant walks up to the sofa Cristina is sitting on
FLIGHT ATTENDANT:
Would you like anything before take off ma'am?
CRISTINA:
a tequila, no lime please.
FLIGHT ATTENDANT:
of course,
she walks to the bar in the back
CRISTINA VOICEOVER CONT.2
All we know for certain, is that if we're willing to embrace it, change isn't always bad.
The flight attendant hands Cristina her glass of tequila as we see the interior of the plane fade to the exterior, and we see the jet take off into the sky, heading for Seattle Washington.
