Tom Chan's Rough Day Part 1
One stormy Monday afternoon in the year of 1979 in the month of April, 13-year-old Tom Chan came home from Golden Brook High School looking like he was in real pain.
Three of Tom's four sisters, 16-year-old Suzie Chan, 8-year-old Nancy Chan, and 6-year-old Mimi Chan ran up to hug him, they were glad to see that he was home.
Suzie, Nancy, and Mimi group hugged Tom really hard.
"Don't hug me so hard," Tom said to Suzie, Nancy, and Mimi. "I've had a really hard day today and I'm really sore!"
Tom went into the kitchen to make an afternoon snack and found 14-year-old Anne sitting at the kitchen table doing her homework while Alan who was also 14-years-old was resting his own sore areas, his neck, shoulders, and down to his central spinal column.
Anne looked at Tom, "What's wrong, Walking Dictionary?" she asked.
Tom didn't even bother to look Anne in the eye, "My hands are sore from sliding down the rope in the rope climb in gym today, I'm not very good at the rope climb!" he groaned in pain.
"You want to talk about soreness," Alan groaned irritably. "try tinkering with an old studebaker!"
Suddenly, the ten Chan children heard a knock on the front door.
Henry turned the Football game he was watching on television off, "I'll get the door, it could be Pop." he said, standing up so as to free his father's red easy chair for him.
Henry, the eldest of the Chan children walked straight to the front door and opened it to find that it wasn't his father but a woman.
Back in the kitchen, Tom was beginning to panic.
"Anne! You have got to help me with the rope climb! Layla Mitchell, this girl I like who won't notice me, is so beautiful and strong! I want to be as strong and as confident in gym class as she is!"
"I'll help you out with the rope climb tomorrow, Tom, I have gym class tomorrow too anyway." Anne said.
Alan stood and stretched his arms over his head, "Now you know why girls aren't my priority." he told Tom, groaning as he put his arms down.
Alan went to the refrigerator for some icy cold coconut milk.
"Mrs. Bloom, what's the matter?" Suzie asked.
"Is Julia here by any chance, Suzie?" Mrs. Marcie Bloom asked.
"No, she isn't, Mrs. Bloom," Suzie answered. "why do you ask?"
"Julia and her father had an argument about her grades and she just up and ran away! And I don't know where she went!" Mrs. Bloom exclaimed now panicking as 10-year-old Flip & the youngest of all, 5-year-old Scooter Chan emerged from the bedroom that they shared with their four older brothers.
"Did you try the park, Mrs. Bloom?" Flip asked.
"No, Flip," Mrs. Bloom said. "I didn't even think of that!"
"I'll come with you." Flip said to Mrs. Bloom.
"Okay," Mrs. Bloom said to Flip. "come on."
Scooter & Mimi entered the kitchen to see Tom snacking on yellow corn tortilla chips & salsa.
"Bad day, Tom?" Scooter asked curiously.
"I do not even want to talk about it, Scooter!" Tom snapped angrily.
