With her father as a baker and her mother as a local musician, Maize always had her share of the arts in life, but hardly any share of the wealth of it. Maize has found a calling in painting, though, and painted a series of places around District 12 to sell back to the people.
Worried about the spreading of this art and therefore creativity, Peacekeepers suggested that she stop painting and start using her talents for more practical jobs. Maize would not let the art rest, though, and continued painting just to give her little kick of rebellion, but that was when the rumors began to spread.
No one knows which Peacekeeper started it, but the idea that Maize had seduced nearly every Peacekeeper in the District in order to delay her arrest for rebellion and theft spread like wildfire. She swore up and down that she had never done such a thing, but what's the word of one against the word of hundreds?
Lark was raised in an orphanage in District 12. After the mine explosion that burned through his childhood home, killing his mother, father and little sister, Lark dedicated himself to the safety and technology of the mines.
He had heard of the terrible rumors about the girl who lived across the street from him, but he never believed a word of them. He did what he could to scrap together enough money to buy the paintings Maize created, even though they were banned.
When the rules were announced for the first Quarter Quell, it wasn't hard to figure out which girl would be voted into the Games. He asked everyone in the District to vote him in alongside her in order to protect her.
