"So, Doc, did you see the Superbowl last night? I mean, Brady, and then that catch, and then they were only a yard away, and -"
Henry looked up from the forms he was filling out, glancing at where Lucas was cleaning the tools they had just finished using.
"Pardon?"
"The Superbowl last night – did you see it?"
Henry frowned. "No – why would I wish to watch a bowl?"
There was a clatter as Lucas dropped a scalpel and then silence for a moment. "What? Come on – everyone watches the Superbowl; even in Japan! How did you not see the Superbowl?"
Henry sighed. "Perhaps because I retired early?"
"But Doc – it's the Superbowl!"
"Yeah – did you see it last night? For once we had an actual game, not just a blowout."
Henry looked over to Hanson as Jo and her partner entered the morgue. Hanson migrated over to Lucas and began to talk about the plays and players, while Jo came over to the Doctor.
"Did you finish the report?"
"Almost – I was interrupted."
"Oh? And what distracted you from your work?"
"Lucas – he was talking about a super bowl."
She smiled and laughed, but then fell silent in shock when he watched her with confusion. "Seriously, Henry? Superbowl? Football? You have no idea what we're talking about?"
"American football?"
"Yes – what other kind is there?"
"What you would call 'soccer'. Yes, I am aware of 'football' – but I fail to see what that has to do with a bowl."
"The two best teams of the nation compete against each other for the championship?" She stared at him incredulously. "Henry, it's the Superbowl – everyone watches it!"
"So Lucas informed me," He stated.
Hanson looked over from where he stood beside Lucas cleaning the tools.
"Wait, you didn't watch the Superbowl?"
Henry sighed and refused to answer.
"It's football – a man's game! How did you not watch it?"
"Why would I wish to watch an event where many adult-aged men run around on a green field and harm each other with the express purpose of reaching the opposite end with the ball?"
"It's about perseverance, about not giving up, about getting back up when you're knocked over -"
"And I could not learn that just as well from life, from interacting with other people?"
"Okay, yeah, you could – but what about the game? The plays? The countdown?"
Henry stared at him blankly and Jo doubled over in laughter. He frowned at her.
"You are not helping this, Jo."
"I can't help it – everyone knows about the Superbowl!"
Henry sighed, looking back to his report. "If the rest of the world wishes to spend their time on such, then let them."
Hanson made one last try. "What about the commercials? Surely you watch those!"
Henry dropped his head into his hands. "No, Hanson, I don't believe I have – wouldn't I have to watch the game itself for that?" He looked up with a frown. "Why would anyone only watch the commercials of something?"
Hanson threw up his hands in surrender. "I give up! You're a hopeless case."
"Abe has often told me the same – may we focus on something work related now?"
Jo took pity on him and nodded. "Sure – what's the verdict this time: murder or accident?"
"Of my patience and comprehension? Murder. Of this victim? Accident. However, with this victim..."
AN: I understand about as much as Henry about football - all information came from the conversation my brother had with me this morning. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! Gramercy, and God bless.
