A Rainbow For Rin

As one exempt from the passage of time, Sesshomaru was quite set in his ways. His idea of change was one-dimensional at best. Nothing could compel him to compromise, and he was especially wary about forging those binding contracts called promises. Or at least he was...

"Lord Sesshomaru!" Rin yipped next to him trying to crawl deeper into the cave. "It's- it's-"

"It's just thunder, you foolish girl," snapped Jaken. He had been stuck for the past hour waiting out the downpour with this child, and her skittishness was hacking away at his small twig of patience.

"Lord Sesshomaru," Rin ignored the irritated imp, "when do you think the sun will come out again?"

"Not soon enough."

Sesshomaru hurled a signature glare at Jaken, then he slowly opened his mouth to respond until the lightening flashed.

BOOM!!

"Eeek!" Rin grabbed the tail end of Sesshomaru's fur.

"Rin..." droned the daiyokai. She only squeezed tighter, not willing to relinquish her security blanket.

He glanced back at Jaken. For someone so critical of a young girl's fears, the toad-demon had become quite clingy of his Head Staff.

"You know," Sesshomaru sighed in something close to exasperation, "there will be a gift from the sky after the storm."

"R-really?" Rin's voice quavered. "You promise?"

Sesshomaru gave only the faintest of nods in reply.

Rin settled down, still not releasing his mane, and waited.

oOo

"Lord Sesshomaru, I don't see anything good that came from the rain." Rin was dubious as she glanced around, exiting the cave after the storm subsided.

"Look up."

"Huh? Oh, Master Jaken! Lord Sesshomaru was right! It is a gift from the sky!"

Painted across the expanse of blue in seven colors was Sesshomaru's promise.

Author's Note: I originally wanted to entitle this story "Sesshomaru's Promise", but was afraid it might be confused with Amara Anon's "Rin's Message and Sesshomaru's Promise" (which I thought was a well written fic.). Anyway, I've always wanted to do a short with Rin and rainbows (the two go hand-in-hand) and I'm pleased with the way this one turned out.
