AN: Okay, this is my first shot at Star Wars fic. I didn't really consciously decide to write it, it just popped into my head demanding to be written. Not only is it majorly AU, but later on in the story I'm gonna break some major Jedi rules and claim that the Council sanctioned it. If you're a purist or something, this story is not for you. Otherwise, read on, and don't forget to review!

&~&~&~&~&~& PROLOGUE: The immense room had high vaulted ceilings and was contructed entirely of black stone that absorbed light rather than reflected it. Facing off on opposite sides of the cavernous chamber were Darth Sidious and Anakin Skywalker. They had been battling with the Force and with lightsabers for hours stretching into days and the Sith Lord sensed that Anakin was weakening. "Join me. Together, we could be great," he urged, using the pulsing, black energy of the dark side to twist the young Jedi's perceptions. Nineteen year old Anakin was wavering on the edge. He tried to fight against the black energy with the white light of the Living Force, but the darkness was inside him as well as bombarding him from the outside. The Sith sensed the conflict within the boy, and seeing that the power of the dark side was stronger, continued to speak persuasive honeyed sentences. "You could marry her, if you joined me. No more of those silly Jedi restrictions about attachments. Isn't that what you really want? Isn't she more important than the Jedi Council? Than the Republic?" Just a month before, Anakin had refused marriage to Amidala, in accordance with Jedi code. Now he saw her face, longed to hold her again. But Darth Sidious' words had an unexpected result. His Padme would hate him if he turned to the dark side. The knowledge that he couldn't have her crushed his soul, but he would survive. He could not bear her hating him. These thoughts gave him the strength to pull free of the insidious influence of the dark side of the Force. "No!" he yelled, "I will never join you!" He spun and left the dark chamber. The Sith Lord was so stunned he did nothing to stop him. He had been so sure the boy was his. What had gone wrong? Anakin went straight to his master Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the Jedi council and told them what had happened. Yoda looked approvingly at the young Jedi. "No harder test than this one could you have passed," he said, "Ready to become a full Jedi Knight are you." At those words, Anakin had to work very hard not to break out into a huge grin. Instead he bowed respectfully and responded, "Your faith in me is most appreciated Master Yoda."
