A/N (from the future!): The original version of this fanfiction was written by me THREE years ago. That means I was way too eager to start on my writing, creating this very messy and unorganized story. Now that I have learned more about writing (and still learning), this fanfic will be undergoing major editing. Since I have been informed that reader-insert type of works aren't allowed, I will be changing Y/N to Yuni as a controlled reader-insert OC. (Check my Camp Camp fanfic for the full explanation of how Yuni works.)

"Once in a mafia, you die with it." These were the words of her father. They were the last words spoken before his hand relaxed for the last time.

The girl had lived a sad life, with her mother leaving after finding out about the mafia. She was 6 years old and innocent, asking her father about the whereabouts of "Mom". He never liked to lie to his baby girl, but it was for the best. "She's at work, far away from here, but she still loves you." The child would wait by the door or watch through a window, waiting for her mother to come home. As she matures, there was more to learn of her father. "Sweetie, I work with people who are very dangerous. If anything should happen to me, you will be the one to take over, okay?" She had a whole mafia on her shoulders at the age of 16. Her name was Yuni, leader of the Human Mafia.

...

"Men! I will be off on a mission. If anything should happen to me, I appoint second in command your new leader." With the mafia being extra careful of Yuni, considering she was much too young to be in such a high position, the young lady almost always had to lie about going on missions on her own to be able to leave base. She wasn't really going on a mission, instead making her way to the top of the ever-mysterious Mount Ebott. The legends say, that under this mountain, lies the Monster mafia and their turf. They had been trapped under there after they lost the fight to the Humans. Yuni would be lying if she said she didn't feel at least a bit guilty, despite the stand-off happening way before her time.

Getting to the top, she peers into the gaping hole thoughtfully. "What happened to them..." She mumbles. Every once in a while, she had thought about jumping down to see if the stories were true. But, she knew her duties as leader preceded her wishes. "Maybe one day."

Turning around, Yuni had wanted to make her way back, no doubt someone had followed her to watch for danger. Without taking even a step forward, a vine latches onto her ankle. "Wha-!" She had fallen down, and there was no going back.

*You wake up to light.

*You shield your face from the light... You look around, confused, looking for the source of my voice in your head. Don't panic, I'm here to guide you. I know how you can get out of here. Just follow my instructions and you'll be home in no time.

Yuni points to her throat, trying to ask about her voice. The oddly childish voice in her head tells her that the fall had caused her voice to become useless with shock. Attempting to stand up proved painful, with sharp, stab-like bursts of heat coursing through to her legs. Seems like they've been broken. Nothing like crawling, right? Upon lifting her body into a sitting position, Yuni is confronted with the sight of golden flowers underneath her. They must've broken the fall to keep her alive. A few deep breaths and a turning of her body, Yuni starts to crawl on her stomach, using her arms to move her forward. There was an entrance close by, maybe someone lived around to heal her?

...

Crawling was hard work, especially when using your arms instead of your knees, but Yuni managed. Upon entering, a single illuminated patch of grass caught the young lady's attention. She approached with caution, almost losing balance when a little flower with a face popped up from out of the ground. Yuni swings herself into a sitting position, scooting closer to the monster, pitifully glancing towards her legs.

"Howdy stranger! I'm Flowey! Flowey the Flower! Seems like you had quite the fall, huh?" The flower, Flowey, asked curiously. He had a little hat on. Yuni guessed he was a part of the Monster Mafia. She nods to answer, as the creature continued to survey her physical form. "Don't worry your human head off, 'cause I got just the thing to help!"

There was a bit of flash before the room lost its color. A little red heart floated in the air by her chest. She pointed to it, looking for an explanation.

"See that? That's your SOUL. The very culmination of your being. You're a determined one, arent'cha? I can tell by the pretty red color!" Flowey watches as the new human smiles awkwardly at the factly compliment. "Now, to heal you!"

Flowey spawns in what can only be described as floating, white pills of some sort. "Down here, Monsters deal in 'friendliness pellets' when they need to heal in battle. Try some! I'll toss them to you!"

"Pellets" didn't sound edible and the way Flowey was aiming them seemed a little too hostile to be considered helpful. Yuni becomes skeptical and dodges. The atmosphere changes slightly.

"Um... What'cha doing, little buddy? Don't you wanna be healed? Try again! I'll throw them slower this time." Another repeat of the last turn. Flowey starts to look annoyed.

"Ugh. Are all humans this stubborn? I can't throw any slower than this, so try and grab them, okay?" Flowey practically pelts Yuni with the pellets, allowing only a small window of time to dodge. Something fishy is going on with this flower. Would all monsters be this impatient?

"Why do you keep dodging me? JUST RUN. INTO. THE BULLETS." Realizing his mistake, Flowey changes "bullets" to "friendliness pellets" at the last second. One last dodge sets the small monster off. His flower bud face contorts itself into a menacing glare that throws Yuni off-guard.

"You know what's going on here, don't you?" Flowey spits in a dark voice. "You just wanted to see me suffer..." Soon, the bullets surround the soul leaving no crack unchecked. There was no escape. "Just for messing with me, I'll give you a proper Monster send-off!" The pellets start to close in. "And remember," His face turns into an empty smile. "In this world, it's Kill or Be Killed! DIE."

Yuni screws her eyes shut, hoping the pain would take her swiftly. Instead, the sound of a pained cry rings out and a new, softer voice is heard. "Do not worry child. He is gone now, never to harm you again." Once her eyes are open, there stood a goat lady. The confused look on the human's face prompts her to introduce herself. "I am Toriel. Caretaker of, well, you and the Ruins, it seems!"

Had she not used a soft voice, Yuni would have been very intimidated. The monster looked like she meant business. Her eyes were a sharp red and her claws painted black. She wore lots of heavy looking necklaces that accentuated her purple overcoat. The Monster Mafia crest was seen sewn to the front of the coat. She wore large black penny loafers that almost hid underneath.

No surprise, she had to be a part of the Monster Mafia. Yet, after however long she must've been down here, she chose to be nice to a human, unlike the previous monster. Yuni, being one to jump to conclusions, guessed that there was probably a weapon hidden somewhere underneath the heavy clothes.

"Come, take my hand, darling." Toriel holds out a hand for the new child to grab ahold of. Yuni had reached out before remembering her legs, looking down and pointing at them uselessly. "Are you hurt?" The girl nods. "Hm... And you can't speak either. Alright, sit still then. This should only take a while." The goat woman knelt down to where Yuni was sitting on the floor, dirtying her dark stockings in the process. She held her hands out, one hovering over Yuni's legs and another over her neck. Closing her eyes, Toriel began to concentrate her magic into her palms, which turned a pale red. Yuni had started to kick into a "fight-or-flight" mode, fearing that the red color meant that Toriel was charging up some sort of attack. But she decided to listen to the goat lady's words and stay still. The sensation in her legs and throat went from a dull numb to warmth to normal.

Toriel stood back up and dusted herself off before offering a hand again. "Okay, once again. Come, take my hand, darling." This time, Yuni was able to pull herself up and say a quick thanks.

"I thought magic was gone for good once the monsters established a mafia. How did you do that?" Yuni asked, also dusting herself off. It had been written in the records passed down from Human boss to Human boss that the fight against Monster-kind was solely an all-out gun war. They were known to have magic of any and every power imaginable but soon lost the talent for it after realizing the more lethal capabilities of hand-held shooters.

"Just because the majority found it easier to fight with weapons doesn't mean a few of us weren't still practicing magic on the side." Toriel smiles. "Don't worry about the other monsters here. I'm the only one who's still somewhat acquainted with the rest of the mafia and still has a way with magic. Those you will come across during your stay are old members who have decided to disband. There are no weapons except for those I own. The least anyone can do is talk to you." Yuni wondered to herself why Toriel felt the need to explain that she was safe down here. If it was an act of hospitality, it only made the young girl more suspicious of her real intentions. "Now, come along. I'll guide you through the challenges of the Ruins."
