Skye still remembers when she didn't like music.
It was something that made her extraordinary. Everyone likes music. Exept for her.
Classmates had shook their heads in disbelief, Jane had tried to explain the romance of it and more than a dozen had tried to get her to understand it, to like it.
Skye explained it to herself that it was something irrational. Why would she like something like that?

She smiles thinking of the times that Jeffrey tried to show her its beauty.
He really took his time to show her different patterns that music could make and how similar they are to algebra. She heard those patterns but didn't see too much beauty in them.
Skye had even played some tunes of the piano.
She didn't see the point in it but it seemed to lighten up Jeffrey's mood.

Later Batty started her obsession with music too.
Different tunes and melodies started filling the Penderwick house. Too much noise for Skye's liking.
Concentrating became a lot harder. She wanted silence.

It wasn't until much later that she attended Jeffrey's concert.
It took place in a huge hall, it reminded her of a theatre hall. She took her seat and waited.
Waited for it to be over. But when Jeffrey started playing something changed.
She didn't seem to mind the noise anymore. In fact, she could hear not only the different patterns of music but how they interacted with another. How they told her a story.

She felt proud of Jeffrey for his musical talent then.
But that was almost nothing compared to the pride she was feeling now.

Her own daughter has always filled her with pride.
She is pretty smart for her age. She masters the art of sarcasm and she could play soccer decently.

Right now, it is her music filling Skye with pride.

It is just the school's talent show so there are almost a hundred students showing off their "talents". It takes place at the gym which leaves not even the slightest space for the feeling of a true show. Still, Skye admits to herself that there is no music that could ever touch her more.

She smiles and thinks of how proud Jeffrey would be of their little daughter.
Their daughter would tell him all about it when they got home, that was for sure.
In her mind Skye stops picturing his proud smile and goes back to listening to her daughter.
