Chapter 1
The Beginning
Pebblestar sat in her cold, stone den watching the clan work it's way through leafbare. The cold didn't bother her as much because of her thick, silver pelt. Jayclan is going through difficult times in leafbare. The birds are far up in their nests trying to keep warm, the squirrels and chipmunks are deep within their cozy nests inside hollow trees, and the mice are burrowed deep into their grass dens trying their best to survive. There is not much water since the rivers nearby are all frozen. Pebblestar began to worry about how long her clan can survive this leafbare.
Pebblestar can smell Fawnpelt's comforting scent.
"Please, come in Fawnpelt." She spoke to the brown and white tom outside her den.
"What do you need?" She spoke.
"Just another report."
Fawnpelt could see Pebblestar's anxiety creeping through her as he met her gaze. He tried to speak as calmly as possible to not trouble his noble leader. As deputy, it is his job to care for his leader, along with carrying out orders to the clan.
"Well, Motheye will kit very soon. She will sleep in the medicine cat's den tonight so Palepetal can help her kit as soon as she can. The fresh-kill pile is slowly growing. I believe Sunwhisker's kits are ready to become apprentices."
"Remind me their names again?"
"Ferretkit and Hazelkit."
"Ah yes, I recall a complaint from Motheye that they were getting too large for the nursery. We will have the ceremony tonight. Who do you recommend to be their mentors?" Spoke Pebblestar.
"Well, I was wondering if it would be alright if I could be Hazelkit's mentor."
"And why is that?"
"I have been watching Hazelkit recently and she seems like she is very intelligent, however very quiet. I believe I can teach her to be more confident in herself as her mentor. Also, I can teach her how to camouflage herself because of her white and brown pelt. "
Hazelkit was a white she-cat with light brown head and paws. Her brother, Ferretkit was a cream colored tom with dark cream colored spots on his rear. He also has a dark cream muzzle.
"Very well. And for Ferretkit?"
"Possibly Dappledheart?"
"I think that is a very good choice."
Pebblestar sent Fawnpelt off to inform Dappledheart of his decision. She watched as Fawnpelt padded over to the warrior's den where Dappledheart resided. As Fawnpelt told the news, Dappledheart's face lit up with excitement.
The thought of warriors to come filled Pebblestar with warmth through the freezing leafbare. As she closed her eyes in her moss nest, she thought of the future of Jayclan and what it may hold.
