ALONE
ALONE
"This pregnancy leave is just leave isn't it?" I asked Dana as she was about to leave the office, "You are coming back? Eventually."
But she didn't answer, Dana just smiled and left. I twirled the Apollo 11 medallion in my hand and I walked around to the other side of the desk. Dana had told me that her doctor had told her to take maternity leave. Of course that was great advice, continuing this work would be dangerous for her and J Edgar. But damn, I would've preferred to get more notice.
I Want To Believe!
That poster was there ever since I came here. And I bet it's been there since the beginning. A picture of a UFO. Man, I felt alien myself. Fox Mulder's gone and now Dana was as well… Whenever I came into the office there was always an X-File ready to go… But what now? Do I wait for the phone to ring? Do I read through the unsolved X-Files or does someone come in and place it on the desk? Damn, she could have shown me the ropes.
I shook my head… Maybe I can give myself a day to wrap my head around this and then get into the swing of things. I had this whole office to myself, hell I had a whole department to myself and I had no idea on how to utilize this. How did Fox Mulder and Dana do it? I lowered my head and tried to think of what I should do. Should I call Fox Mulder? Nah, that would be stupid.
The familiar sound of footsteps tapping the concrete floor approaching made me smile, "You're gone for five minutes Agent Scully and I already feel like a stranger in my own office." I called out.
Instead of Dana there, this other woman was there, "I'm sorry." The woman said.
"Can I help you?" I asked.
"I'm here to help you actually." She extended her hand, "I'm Leyla Harrison."
She began rabbiting on about meeting me or something or rather. But when she mentioned something about having an X-File, at least there was something, someplace to start. She introduced herself again.
Damn! Agent Harrison was perky, blonde and excitable. I wished I was ALONE again.
All through the damn case it was always Mulder and Scully came across this, Mulder and Scully came across that. Maybe it was this, maybe it was that. I really just wanted to throttle her to shut her up. But this was her first field assignment. I thought that maybe this was Agent Kersh's revenge on me and the X-Files. I told her what I thought, and she seemed hurt. This was an assignment she personally asked for.
Damn Kersh must have thought his Christmases had come at once with this one.
When she mentioned Agent Mulder and Scully again that was the last straw. Sure she was almost blind and scared. But do you see them here? No it's just us, trapped in some sort of maze complex and walking around trying to find an exit. And all Leyla could think about was bloody Fox Mulder and Dana. I hurt her feelings when I told her that they're not here.
That wasn't my intention.
Leyla could have been a good agent if she wasn't thrown in feet first into the deep-end of the X-files. But she took leave as well. Is there something about me? Of course not. Fox Mulder gave me the medallion that I had lost. It was true though… Nobody gets there alone. I handed it back to him and told him that there was somebody who'd appreciate it more than me.
Leyla Harrison.
I watched them talking to her in her room. As they argued about some sort of damn UFO or something, Leyla looked at them as if she had just met some huge Hollywood stars. She was sitting on the bed playing with the Apollo 11 medallion and was going or google-eyed.
Nobody gets there alone. How true. Even a first-timer can help you out. I don't think I'd be so quick to judge someone next time.
