-1Chapter 1
"You really do have a chick loose in here."
"Yeah, I told you I had a chick loose in here. There she goes by the kitchen!"
(They run after Stella.)
"Don't step on her!"
"She cut right in front of me."
"OK, well she's being graded so let's not squash her."
"Well then tell her to watch where she's going."
(Later)
"I swear, she went over there."
"We looked over there."
"Well, she went under that chair and she didn't come out."
"We moved the chair, we searched the floor, nothing."
" Well then she went under the chair and through a hole in the floor."
"There is no hole in the floor."
"Well maybe there was a hole in the floor and she crawled through it and fixed it."
"So she's a super intelligent chick with great physical and deductive skills?"
"Yes."
"Oh, this is not a chick I want to find."
"Hey, Luke, what did you mean earlier?"
"What are you talking about?"
"When you got here. You made some comment about me not really having a chick in the house."
"Hmm."
"I mean, if I didn't have a chick here, why did you think I was calling?"
"No, I thought you were calling about the chick."
"It didn't seem like it."
"Well maybe it didn't seem like it but it was."
"Was what?"
"Was what I thought -- can we just keep looking?"
"OK. I just still think that -- "
"There she is."
"Where?"
"Over there!", he pointed, as they both dashed for the coffee table. "We'll surround her. You go on that end, and I'll go on this one." They both squatted on opposite ends of the short table. "Alright, on the count of three we'll grab her. One, Two, Th-"
At that moment Stella chirped, startling Lorelai, who jumped and crashed her head into the table. "Ow, Damn it!"
"Lorelai, are you ok?…Ouch!", Luke jumped instantaneously after her, hitting his head against the table. They both laid down under the coffee table, trying to clear the massive headaches that now resided in their heads. With a chirp, Stella hopped onto Luke's head, and Lorelai burst out laughing and Luke couldn't help but join in.
"Come here, trouble", Lorelai ordered the chick as she rolled over and picked her up. Glancing down she noticed just how close she was to Luke. For the second time this night she had an urge to lean over the few miniscule inches and connect their lips, to have his prickly five o'clock shadow rub her soft skin.
"Mom, Apricot is missing!", and for the second time that night her urge was denied.
