Darkness was falling fast, but the remnants of what the world had once known as New York City was illuminated by the burning fires that were a constant feature of this desecrated place.
Amongst the rubble, surrounded by figures hidden in the shadows sits a girl, the echoing screams now but a dull ache to her ears and she pulls the body in her arms closer to her chest, whispering attempts at consoling words as the man that stood near her approaches, his hands glowing a blood stained crimson.
The body in her arms stirred, a feeble hand reaching up to caress her cheek.
'You have to go'. The girl shook her head, pressing a kiss into her lovers open palm.
'It should never have had to end this way'
The girls head shot up, emerald meeting emerald as an unspoken verse passed between them.
'It never should have begun'
The man chuckled, throwing his head to the side to glance around the scenes spectators, only to be thrown back by a flaming force as the young man stood from his lovers embrace only to pull her up and bring her before him, his hands reaching to bring her head close to his.
'You have to go, now' he uttered in a soft urgency, all too aware of the enemy advancing towards them. Careful not to disturb the eerie silence that surrounded them,
'You have to do this, the world wasn't meant to end this way'
The young girl brought her forehead to rest against her lovers, relishing the closeness and warmth 'What if its not enough'
The man closed the gap and placed upon her lips a searing kiss, holding onto her as if he knew this was their last moment on earth.
Bright red light shot out only to be reflected by the young man.
'Go, get out of here' his head shot around to meet the gaze of the young woman with whom he had fallen so earth shatteringly in love with and for just a second, the earth stood still.
'For our future'
He nodded unable to look away as she turned her tear stain face away.
A blinding green, almost white light sent everyone crashing towards the ground, only to disappear as quickly as it came. She was gone, and there was a strong foot crushing against his windpipe, an enraged voice bellowing above him 'Do you realise what you have done'
Before he knew it the young man had been brought to his feet, suspended in the air by an unseen force.
'I killed your father her, your mother… ' he stepped closer '…your sister … your cousins' a calm smirk appeared '…seems only right you should die with the rest of them Summers'
And with that a telepathic punch sent Nathan crashing into the tombs stones that scattered the ground, the last legacy of the Xmen. With his last ounce of strength he turned his sight towards the sky and smiled before the darkness enveloped him.
ELSEWHERE
The Xmen were all gathered in the foyer of the mansion when a dazzling light suddenly appeared, forcing them to shield their eyes. Once it cleared, they saw lying before them a girl, no older than eighteen years of age glancing up at them.
Within a second Logan had her pinned up against the wall
'Who are you kid?' His claw menacingly inching towards her face.
Though the tear marks were still visible, her face was neutral and she simply stared without fear beyond his feral gaze towards the gathered crowd.
'I'm the one who's going to save your future'.
