For lack better language, Lou was pissed. Mad, angry, livid; all of it applied to how she was feeling toward her father at this very moment while standing on the cold street corner. So this was what, another missed dinner? Big deal. Just add it on to the pile of missed dance recitals, missed art gallery showings, her college graduation. Now come to think of it, being pissed probably didn't cover the half of it.

Just when she started to feel the unwanted sting of tears creep into the corner of her eyes, Lou heard the familiar rumble of motorcycle machine and she turned around to see Joe, her knight in scuffed leather.

"You okay?" he asked, killing the engine. She opened her mouth to speak, but didn't know what to say. She opted for a shrug and he handed her the spare helmet he'd brought. "Get on."

She did, bracing herself as the engine revved up. She held on when he took off down the road, away from the fancy restaurant and away from the broken dinner date with her absent father. Away from from the life of broken expectations and speeding toward the life she'd made on her own, thank you very much.

She'd deny it later, but she couldn't help but cling to Joe's waist a little tighter, as though she was holding on to the one man that she was able to depend on time and time again.

FIN.
