Accepting Reality
.
.
A Milton never got the girl. That's how it went.
Milton had accepted it by now, but Jack got everything. He lived a charmed life. He could do no wrong. Jack was the hero and Milton was lucky to be called a sidekick. And the hero always got the leading lady. Milton knew that Jack and Kim would some day become a reality and so he didn't let himself get too caught up with the fantasy that he could ever get her. He wasn't a complete dill. Jack deserved the girl. And even though Kim was his first kiss he knew Kim was completely out of his league.
With all that knowledge well embedded into his skull, he still found himself having a bit of resentment when Kim and Jack became a reality. Sure, he had a nice girlfriend and everything but she couldn't compare to Kim. Just like Jack got the bigger and better trophies and the bigger and better acclaim, he also got the best girl that Milton had ever known. Kim was stunning and she was his closest girl friend and he had a special bond with her. Not special enough to out charm Jack, but it was special to him. And now Jack truly had it all.
Milton sat on one of the chairs inside the mall, wasting time before practice, wasting time where he wouldn't have to happen upon Jack and Kim flirting with each other. He was comfortable with his lot in life! With his ridiculously small spelling bee trophies, with his pasty body (that wasn't pasty at all, he argued), with the fact that the academic would never succeed in life where it really mattered... he'd accepted it! So why now was he so bothered by the inevitable pairing up of the hero and the heroine? The two who were made to be from the start?
His shoulders slumped, he watched the people go by, wondering why life was so unfair. He could have been born someone like Jack -admired, respected... But he wasn't. He was Milton. And a Milton never got the girl. Never got THAT girl anyway, at least he got A girl.
"Hey Milton, 'Sup?" Jerry sat beside him, oblivious that Milton wanted some quiet time to get his thoughts together.
"Don't you think it's weird that Jack and Kim are together now?" Milton asked with a scratchy voice, hesitant to know what his friend thought about it.
Jerry shook his head. "Not really, they're still just Kim and Jack... except with making out."
Milton stuck his tongue out sourly. "Yeah, that's the part I don't like."
"Cheer up pal, it's not like us to get in the way of true love. Besides there are certain advantages to Jack being distracted." Jerry smirked evilly, rubbing his hands together.
"I guess you're right." It was the way nature had designed it. The Milton never got the heroine. The Milton never was the big hero. But had to relish in small victories. "So what are you doing to Jack?"
