A/N: So this is my version of Jasper's story from when he met Maria till he meets Alice. Some of the dialogue in this chapter is from Eclipse.
Disclaimer: I don't own Twilight, unfortunately
Prologue
Galveston, Texas- 1863
The sun was setting over Galveston as the youngest Major in the Texas army rode back towards the city. The blistering heat of the day was giving way to the equally uncomfortable humidity of the night as Jasper Whitlock tipped his hat back and wiped the grime from his forehead, his usually blonde curls dark with sweat. His head slumped forwards as his eyes, weak with fatigue, slipped shut. His horse suddenly tossed its head and whinnied in fear. Startled, Jasper whipped his head around, searching for the source of his mount's distress. Then he saw them.
Next to the dried up river bed stood three beautiful women. Jasper immediately urged his horse towards them in case they required assistance. As he got closer, he noticed all three were unnaturally pale, despite the clear Mexican features on the face of the tiny brunette. His horse began to buck and rear, perhaps sensing the danger that Jasper had not yet realised he was in. He quickly slid off the terrified animal just before it wheeled around and galloped back down the road.
The hair on the back of his neck began to stand up as a sudden cold breeze gusted past him. His skin began to prickle as he slowly turned around to face the three women who were now stood far closer to him than they had been mere seconds ago. The blonde leaned in close and inhaled deeply.
'Mmm, lovely', she sighed with pleasure.
Jasper stood frozen in place as the tiny Mexican woman chastised her.
'Concentrate Nettie. I want to keep this one.'
The tallest girl spoke for the first time, her voice musical.
'If you want this one Maria you'd better do it. I kill them more often than I keep them'
Maria nodded, 'Yes, I'll do it. Take Nettie away, I need to focus.'
Jasper watched in shock as the two blondes wheeled around and ran towards Galveston. They looked like they were flying as their feet seemed to hardly touch the ground and their long dresses billowed out behind them.
He stood rooted to the spot as Maria questioned him in a lilting tone.
'What's your name soldier?'
'Major Jasper Whitlock, ma'am', he responded, his upbringing had taught him to be polite to women, even if this one didn't seem quite human.
'Well Jasper, I have a good feeling about you. I truly hope you survive'.
Jasper's instincts were screaming at him to run, but his feet would not obey his brain. He stood frozen with fear as Maria rose up onto her tiptoes, as if she was about to kiss him. She tilted her head towards his neck and the last thing Jasper Whitlock felt in his human life was Maria's teeth slicing into his vein.
A/N: So what did you think? Let me know!
