It was raining. Draco stood by the window looking out at his backyard. The sky was dark and heavy as the clouds slowly showered the dry earth. Large puddles had formed right at the edge of the house, water dripping off the roof to give life to the plants before. The yard beyond was soaked, the soil saturated and slightly muddy. Draco was not so much concerned by the rain. He was dry and warm within his house, a fire lit behind him to keep out the drafty air. What truly concerned him was the girl who currently sat outside in the rain.
She didn't even care to seek refuge under their large apple tree. She was just as soaked as the grass. Her blonde hair, normally wispy and light, was now dark and plastered to her head. She turned her head to the sky, her wide blue eyes open and searching for something only she could see. Her mouth moved wordlessly as she voiced her thoughts to the sky. Her face was wet though Draco couldn't be sure it was simply from the rain. She wore a long blue dress which clung to her body like a second skin. Draco swallowed hard. She always wore that dress on this day. She had told him the story of the dress the first time he saw her wear it. It was made with small nimble hands guided by the caring and nurturing hands of another. It reminded her of a past she tried to forget but could never really get over. It brought her both joy and sorrow on this day.
However, this year it happened to be raining. He had begged her to stay inside today. They would do their celebration and mourning inside, but she wouldn't have it. The dance was to be done outside, as she had always done. It was tradition and one thing Draco knew and respected was tradition.
So he had let her go into the rain. She had done the dance as she always did, uncaring of the water beating down on her. He watched her flowing movements in awe, as he did every year. She was a great dancer, though her moves may have been unconventional. The dance however had ended about an hour ago and still she remained in the rain.
He stepped through the glass doors leading to the back door with a large warm towel in hand. He approached her slowly, bending down to shelter her shoulders from the rain, though it didn't matter anymore.
"Are you ready to go now?" he asked softly. Her skin was cold to the touch. He wanted her to come inside out of the rain. He wanted her to sit by the fire with the warm cup of tea he had waiting for her. He wanted the life to return to her so she would be alright for another year.
She nodded before she let him help her off the ground. They walked back to the house, their feet wet from the soggy yard, squelching loudly with every step.
She asked softly, "Do you think she liked it?"
He leaned over and gave her a kiss on the cheek and brought her close, "I'm sure she loved it, like she does every year."
