Declan Napier is a little different than most people. He first learns about his kind (or 'freaks' as his father used to bark) when he was four on the news. The news program showed a clip of a woman disappearing into the clouds, spinning around as she did so. He watched in awe, he'd never seen anything like it.

'Freaks' his dad mumbled reaching for the remote but it wasn't there anymore, his young son held it in his small hands captivated by the images on the TV.

His father shakes his head and storms down the hall. The young boy can hear him throwing things around back there but he doesn't pay much attention.

'Stunning new evidence about this new development has come to light today' the news woman said. He had no idea what she was saying, there were too many big words but he pretends he knows, nodding along

He realises he's one of them when he's six and his father backs his car over him in the garage. He barely even feels it and he's pretty sure he should. He remembers something about the creepy movie that he shouldn't have watched last month but did anyway, when the car hit the lady she screamed a loud scream. One so loud mum heard and stormed into his room.

But it just sort of tickles, like the feather Ben Johnson a kid in his class had attacked him and his friends with. Yes that's it. It feels like a feather.

His mum screams and runs towards him, flailing her arms around begging his father to drive off him. He doesn't seem to hear and continues backing out of the garage. When the car is finally off him he just lays there listening to the screaming. 'You've killed him!' mum is yelling tears running down her cheeks.

'Mummy' he says finally moving. She almost screams in fear when he sits up.

'You're okay?' she asked in a high pitched voice showing she's terrified.

'Fine' he smiles not realising the gravity of the situation 'want to go play football with me?'

'You're okay' she repeats but this time it's not a question

His father moves out the next week. He doesn't seem him again until he's ten. He's trying to get his petition to 'get rid of the freaks' signed by people passing by. Most just laugh in his face. Some just glare at him and walk away. He doesn't know exactly why but he knocks the clipboard into the mud. 'Hey Freak!' his father says 'what did you do that for?'

He doesn't answer just smirks slightly, happy for his little bit of revenge and walks away

His mum just doesn't know what to do by the time he's thirteen. He's developed a talent for teleportation that he just can't control along with the telekinesis that he can't help but use. She sees the pamphlet for Erinsborough Academy at the shops one day and picks it up.

When he sees it and notices that it's a boarding school he gets so mad that he accidently teleports himself to England.

/

She promises she won't send him there and continues to go his old school for two more years. But when he's almost finished his school year at fifteen and end up somehow ending up on top of the flag pole during assembly they expel him

He suggests Erinsborough Academy this time. He knows it will help him. She nods and hugs him.

He starts at the beginning of the next school year and begins the journey of a life time by accidently teleporting himself into the main hall where half the school is gathered and falling on his face
