Yue's Last Days

Sokka reflects on his first love, Yue, whom he hadn't been able to protect.

The snowflakes fell around Sokka, dancing their dances. They reminded him of Yue. Then again, almost everything reminded him of Yue. He sighed and stared at the icy sea. His arms were crossed, and he was thinking of Yue. Again.

There had been the first time he saw her, with her gorgeous white hair and amazing blue eyes. Her beauty was breathtaking. He closed his eyes, trying to remember her better. He wouldn't be able to forget her. Her laughter was like music, her smile like the sun rising over the snow. He opened his eyes and smiled a bit. It was a good thing he hadn't told her those things.

He watched some Water Tribe kids playing in the snow, throwing snowballs, building snow sculptures, and penguin sledding. How he missed penguin sledding. But riding on animals reminded him of riding on Appa, and him taking Yue for a ride on Appa. It had been so romantic. She had loved flying, and Sokka was happy to let her fly with him. But then the black snow had fallen. And the moon spirit was killed, leaving Yue to let herself get killed. He had been told to protect her. He had failed.

Not to mention the horrible apparition in the swamp. Yue had appeared in a beam of light, upset. She had even admitted that he hadn't protected her. Her beauty had astonished him even more. She was so wonderful, so beautiful, whether a spirit, human, or the moon, shining in the night sky.

It was growing dark, and the moon was coming out. The children were called home, but Sokka stayed, thinking of Yue. Suddenly, a glowing figure appeared. Her white hair flowed around her.

"Yue," Sokka breathed. Yue smiled at him sadly.

"Sokka, you must stop calling me here. You know I had to save my people. It was my duty."

"There had to have been some other way," Sokka replied, and looked down. "Some other way that I could have protected you," he murmured. Yue took his chin in her hand and made Sokka face her.

"Sokka, you protected me the best you could. The image in the swamp was a mere dream, Sokka. Dreams are not real. You must learn to let me go. Let me go and love your girlfriend, Suki. Let me go, and go on with your life. Let me go," she whispered, and gave him a kiss while she gradually faded away. When she was gone, Sokka stood up. Yue was right. He had to let her go. He looked back once at the full moon.

"Good bye, Yue," He whispered, tears standing in his eyes. Then he faced forward, and brushed the tears away. He headed toward his village. It was time to let her go.
