Enter Kagome, Invisible
Chapter 1
The barest of a whisper of moonlight entered the insignificant grass hut through the wind-worn window. Curtains swayed at an odd staccato rhythm as a faint breeze blew across the landscape. Crickets chirruped to the night as if trying to block the oppressive silence the night brought. The pale disc of the moon glowed against the black, star covered sky, just reaching it's peak.
Minutes ticked by as the night chorus continued, unconsciously muffling the sound that was being revealed. The cry of a lonely soul.
Pushing aside the rough woolen blanket and sitting up, the illuminated wraith; for that is how she moved, shed the bedding and stood beside it. The blanket fell in what resembled a nest over the tatami mat, which provided the traditional Japanese bed. The room was small as were the others in the dwelling, but was significantly different. For it had no personal belongings other than the half carved statute sitting in the corner, on a low table-stool. Her clothes, on the other side of the room were folded neatly and precisely, no different than those of the neighbor girl. Other than that, her room was kept cruelly immaculate.
Kagome moved to the window and looked out to the moon and stars. 'Its so pretty from here' She sighed resting her elbow upon the sill and propping her chin on her palm. 'Too bad it's the only place I can see it from' She thought bitterly.
As a young child, Kagome would go off on her own exploring the surrounding woods, but lately she had been confined to the room she resided in. Once a free-spirited youth, Kagome was now feeling the opression of her parents.
Wanting a boy, Kagome's mother, pregnant, gave birth to a baby girl. Ayaka, once thought to have been barren had finally concieved a child. Given the circumstances Ayaka and her husband Yuko were overjoyed to finally have the chance to be parents. Ayaka now completed household tasks with more fervor than ever and Yuko put more of himself into his work at the local rice mill. The Higurashi household seemed to explode with life at the news of the coming child. It was a joyous occassion.
On the day of Kagome's birth, her mother was in the fields harvesting rice on an early Autumn day. Aching in her back had signaled a time for a resting period so she had found a shaded spot under a giant tree. The tree had been named Goshinboku and was hundreds of years old. It was considered the holiest tree in that area and maybe all of Japan in that Era.
Hands on her stomach Ayaka enjoyed the breeze until the twinge in her back gave way to a sharp stab of pain. Gasping, eyes wide she realized that the time had come for the baby. She pushed her hands and grunted as she strained to her feet. Wobbling slightly, she doubled over as another wave of pain came over her, clutching her stomach with white knuckled fingers. As the pain receded she again started towards her home on the hill overlooking Goshinboku.
Panting with exertion Ayaka reached the small hut at the top of the hill. Beads of sweat made slow trails through the grime on her face leaving little pathways of moisture.
