Hinamori
and Kira had both respected their captains, admired them greatly, but
hadn't understood them. Hadn't understood them at all. Would
never.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hisagi Shuuhei was different. He had admired his captain greatly,
respected him, but he understood Tousen.
Not that Shuuhei was another Kaname, blind to everything but his path of 'justice', and 'peace'.
Shuuhei knew that justice was objective. And instead of seeing one true path, he saw many little branches, a thousand different paths, all just. He believe strongly in justice, but he believed just as much in other things; more in some. He believed in friends and family and trust and happiness. He believed in living, laughing, loving, learning, discovering.
He believed in peace, but not for the ideal of peace, not just for peace's sake. Shuuhei believed in peace to keep safe all those things he held dear, because it was what would allow everything he held dear to flourish. Fighting could be darkness, both Kaname and Hisagi knew, but Shuuhei could see the sparkling sun at the end of the battle. Literally and figuratively.
He believed in
fighting, too. In fighting a defensive war, not one of aggression,
not one like Aizen's. Just as he believed in peace to keep safe, he
believed in fighting to save.

Hinamori idolized and Kira followed blindly, but Shuuhei walked with his eyes open, seeing everything and never judging. He picked up attributes from his captain, but he never lost himself. That was what made him different than Kira and Hinamori.
It was what made him different than Tousen.
