At Camp Green Lake the boys were delinquents. They were sent there for crimes they had committed, and had to dig a hole every day. They had a Mess Hall, a Rec (the boys spelled it Wreck) Room, Tents A-E for the boys, Tent F for the staff (all of the counselors were women), and a "Library" where they stored their shovels and laundry. The Warden of Camp Green Lake was Jack Wood. He was an evil man who made his nail polish out of Rattlesnake venom. He was feared by all of the boys, and even the counselors. The head counselor, Louise Walker, went by the name "Mrs. Ma'am," and was almost as evil as Jack Wood. She was a paroled criminal, much older than Jack himself, and one of the tallest people at the whole camp. The camp was located on the Eastern shore of a large lake, where the boys could water-ski in. The camp itself is the former city of Green Lake.
Camp Blue River was an all-girls detention camp. They were sent there for crimes they had committed, and also had to dig a hole every day. They had a Dining Hall, a Rec House, Tents A-E for the girls, Tent F for the staff (the counselors were tough men who treated the girls horribly), and a "Post Office" where they stored their shovels and laundry. The Warden of Camp Blue River was Violet Wood, sister of Jack Wood. Her camp is about 100 miles away from his, in the same Texas desert. It is also his camp's sister facility. The camp was located on the West bank of the Harris River. The girls were allowed to go boating in the river. The camp is the former town of Blue River. Both camps were at least 100 miles from the nearest city.
When Violet Wood was arrested for robbing a bank, and later sentenced to 8 years in prison, all of the staff of Camp Blue River were fired, and Violet contacted her brother, Jack, and he agreed to take her girls, but was not happy about that at all. He treated the girls even worse than his boys. He himself was later arrested, along with Louise Walker, and all of his detainees were released
