That time of the year again.
That wonderful festival.
A Matsuri, in other words.
And a girl by that same name is standing beside me right now as I look out the inn window, moonlight streaming in like the waters of the Danube.
''Temari-san, I've made tea. Come have some,'' she says sweetly, albeit a bit meekly.
Piles of paperwork lay neglected, strewn wildly on a cherry wood desk behind me , like pieces of a china vase that had been smashed asunder.
Gaara had allowed me to take a helper with me on this business trip and she had volunteered. Turned out I would need that help very much. Mountains of paper had greeted me when I arrived , though they were about as welcome as stab wound. The Hokage, a.k.a Naruto, was probably trying to kill me.
There was so much work to do, I had to skip the Summer Festival.
''Erm, Temari-san, the tea's getting cold.''
Oh, I forgot. Whipping around, I grab the clay cup and take a big swig, only to scald my tongue, dropping it in shock and letting the tea warm my socks.
'Getting cold ', my foot.
Wondering why I was wearing socks in the middle of summer, I sneezed.
Darn influenza. Could my stay get any worse?
Someone's knuckles rapping incessantly on my room door startled me out of my self-pity. Matsuri lets the surpise visitor in for me, and in strolls a tall , lean figure, his usual spiky, obsidian ponytail drooping slightly as he clears the hills of paperwork, pushing it roughly to one side of the table and setting bags of the usual fare you get at fesivals in the space ; tsukune, takoyaki, yakitori, whatever has a 'yaki' in it, candy apples, candy floss, you name it, he bought it.
''Thought that since you couldn't go to the festival troublesome woman,'' Shikamaru grumbles,
'' I'd hafta bring it to you instead. Eat up. Since there's so much, we'll share.''
We all give a hearty laugh. For what, I do not know, but it was fun, very fun.
Now I just have to break it to him that I absolutely hate octopus.

A/N: I was bored, okay? I needed a way to distract myself from my brother's nattering. I get the feeling he doesn't like me a lot right now...
