Klaus awoke to a blinding light shining down on him from above. Soon after, it subsided to a dim - but pulsing - light which spread across his room with a mid-morning glow. Although this particular Original Hybrid had a more civilised approach to life (to some extent) he had quite the temper, which was largely overshadowed by his aggressive nature and indestructibility. The shady figure looming over his vulnerable state appeared to be his youngest – and, other than himself, his most destructive – brother, Kol.
"Hello, brother." Kol smirked sarcastically, his outstandingly British accent echoing through Klaus's high-ceilinged bedroom. "It seems to me that your 'lovely' blonde princess is here to see you, bringing with her something rather … inspiring … for you. Have fun." But before his most irritating sibling could completely ruin his morning by interfering with his, admittedly rather slow, love life, Klaus snapped his neck and through the remains through the – unopened – window. Leaving a pile of blood and glass on the ground below, Klaus thought that he would face the wrath of his mother, Esther, later but decided it was worth it to see Kol's face as soon as he woke.
My, what a fool, Klaus thought to himself as he strode down the stairs of his luxurious mansion (the Mikaelson's luxurious mansion) wearing nothing bar a pair of silk pyjama bottoms along with his ever devious smirk permanently plastered to his face. This was – surprisingly – still withstanding as his gazed upon the beauty that became Caroline, regardless of what she was gripping in her hand, and even in spite of the fact that she was (unknowingly) dripping blood on to his cream carpet lining the hallways of his 'Haunted House'.
Caroline had finally turned in to the blood-thirsty killer that Klaus knew was deep down inside of her, and had been longing to finally meet. This was proven as she stood in the Mikaelson's foyer, with her own mother's severed head hanging from her clutches. It was immediately clear to Klaus that Caroline had made this destruction which she fruitfully littered all over the floor (the gushing blood flowing from the remainder of her 'beloved' mother).
"Hey, Klaus. I hope I didn't wake you. But … I felt that this trumps whatever you were doing already. So … how are things?" Caroline began, an unusually chipper tone in her voice. Obviously, this blonde vampire had not turned off her emotions, quite to Klaus's disappointment, but had miraculously changed?
"Hello, love. Now, Caroline, why is there blood on my carpet?" Klaus said, clearly knowing the answer to his rhetorical question.
"Oh, quit your whining, Klaus! I came to you first because I knew you'd understand what I'm going through. Anyway, my mom was getting on my nerves, so I thought: 'I could listen to this crap, or – "
But before Caroline could finish her sentence, Klaus had ran over to her and started kissing her passionately. Which, to his delight, she returned. "That's better, love. I thought you'd never shut up." Klaus said with a playful smirk – he'd been wishing for this day for over a thousand years, and was not about to give up the opportunity by neglecting to seize it. "Wow, Klaus. So, you don't mind that I made a mess? – what with my mom's head, and all."
"I could not be more delighted, love." See, Caroline was the only person that didn't seem to make Klaus permanently want to hit something. The other members of his family had all resented him over the years, for 'killing their loved ones', or 'putting daggers in their hearts when they got annoying', which in turn made him resent those around him. Apart from Caroline. No, she was different – her stubbornness, her determination. Those, in Klaus's eyes, were her finest qualities, even though the majority of people thought that she was an all-around-bitch.
"Oh, yeah, umm … Where should I put the head?" Caroline questioned, innocently batting her eyelashes at Klaus.
"Well, where's the rest of the body to begin with? We're going to need to find a place to bury all of the evidence. I'll get my lovely pack of Hybrids to sort it for you. Don't you worry your gorgeous head about it love." Replied Klaus.
"Klaus, I'm not an idiot. Although many people often perceive me as being that way. Their heads would just be lovely buried with my mother's. Hmmm … Klaus?" Said a rather … scheming Caroline.
"What is it, love?"
"I was just wandering … do you need that filthy doppelganger anymore to make your Hybrids?"
"It seems not, I harvested a large quantity of her blood so that – should the day ever come – I could get rid of her once I was finished … playing my little games with her. What were you thinking?"
"I was just thinking that she always did doubt my intelligence."
Many years went passed, and Klaus and Caroline's relationship on grew stronger and more unbreakable. They made a fantastic pair of ruthless vampires (although Klaus was a Hybrid). "It's such a wonderful sight – they don't realise what's going on until the split second before the life leaves their eyes … so tragic, yet so beautiful." Klaus pondered, not knowing that Caroline was watching from behind him – he had had his guard down around her recently, a weakness which he wasn't desperately enjoying. Caroline strolled in to Klaus's bedroom from her hiding place wrapped in the shadows and bent down to cover his eyes. "Guess who?"
"Ah, Caroline. I was just about to show you something." Klaus commented just as he whipped out a piece of rough sketching paper from one of the many drawers that were stacked around the room. On it was a drawing of Caroline, right down to the soft curves of her cheekbone and the dimples on her smiling face. "It's beautiful, Klaus. And that reminds me – I have something to show you too!" Caroline jumped on Klaus's back just as he was about to interrupt, and guided him down the stairs and on to the vast patio which spread along the entire edge of the far side of the house. Caroline swiftly climbed down and led Klaus on to the far side of the grass. "What's this, Caroline?"
"Open it!" The blonde vampire replied in a nonchalant way. Klaus stood staring at the envelope wrapped in a pink ribbon – as only Caroline would have put there. He read the contents of the envelope – it was a recipe to replicate doppelganger blood. "Where did you find this, love?" Klaus asked Caroline, stunned at her gesture.
"Oh, did you like it? I just felt bad about … you know … killing the last doppelganger that would be able to give you the blood you needed to create more Hybrids. I thought that I might as well do some digging, and I found this. It doesn't even require a witch … which is good because you know that I already killed Bonnie."
"Thank you." That was the first time in a long time that he had said that to anyone and actually meant it.
"Well, you are very welcome. And you do realise that you are the only person that I would ever do this for, right?"
"Yes, Caroline. I know."
And with that they rode off in to the sunset. But not quite. Because just as they were absorbed in that moment, cherishing each other's company, both Caroline and Klaus woke up.
Author's Notes
This is my first ever story on FanFiction! I apologise for any mistakes that I have made - grammar, punctuation, story line! I hope you like the first chapter! I know it's a bit dark to start off with, but I hope that anyone reading liked it anyways!I'm not completely sure when in The Vampire Diaries that this is set, but I know that it's after Caroline gets turned in to a vampire, that's about it. I also will be putting a few killed off characters back in to my story, but I'm not sure who yet. Maybe Alaric - for his bromance with Damon, or I might just focus on Klaus and Caroline for the whole thing and not add that many people in. Anyway, I will try and add the next chapter ASAP!
