A/N: I love this pairing so much, so I decided to start a drabble collection for them. I borrowed this first one off a table from a 100 prompts community on LJ, but I don't know if I'll keep using it. That's all. By the way, this is set in a High School AU, in case mentions of science and gym class aren't a giveaway ;) [word count: 446]

PS, I don't own Fullmetal Alchemist, Ling, or Lan Fan. But that's pretty obvious, y/y?

1. First Kiss

A girl's first kiss. Isn't that one of the things that's supposed to be important? Life-changing, probably. Shakes you to the core, makes you think about him all the time, plagues your thoughts, rattles your dreams, blah blah blah. Whatever it's supposed to do, it's not one of those things that usually crosses Lan Fan's mind. Usually it's science she's worried about—not one of her strong subjects. Gym class is easy; always has been, she's the kind of girl who can run laps as long as the teacher wants and pushes on while her classmates give up all over the place. Lan Fan joined the girls' soccer team on their third week at this school. Ling said it was a good idea. He never missed a game.

That first kiss is supposed to be special. Or at least, it's just one of those things that her classmates have tried to point out (literally, by pointing to those stupid magazines that "all girls should read"). In high school, Lan Fan figures it's better to take care of the grades and then worry about all those littler things later.

Except Ling Yao. Ling would always be first. He would always be first, but this kind of bond isn't something that these stupid girls would understand. There's more to it than spending every moment together that they possibly could. Then again, in their eyes all they can see amounts to Lan Fan sticking by Ling's side as soon as they're within a twenty-foot radius of each other. "Are you two dating?"

"…No."

"Oh." And that would be the end of the conversation. At least, at the time, it would be the end of the conversation.

Sometimes the unexpected happens. No, the unexpected happens a lot. And the things you expect might come when you least expect them but that's another story. This one starts with a kiss. Lan Fan's first one. Bing. It happens.

Most of the time, the unexpected happens. Like discovering that the young master you're determined to keep safe has soft lips. Technically, it could be blamed on a miss-calculation. Hm, seems as if the guy couldn't quite figure out which angle from which to approach.

Maybe it's too early in the morning to pinpoint reasons. Lan Fan tries not to assume that it could have been on purpose, oh no, she just couldn't assume that kind of thing.

"Uh," Ling struggles for words, like he's trying to pull them out of the air. "Good morning?"

This is the part where she tries to keep walking like her legs are still sturdy. "Good morning." And it doesn't work.
