********************************************************************** Scott's eyes danced around the circle that formed. Every one was hunched over to hear Scott's answer. His eyes finally rested on Shelby who had gotten up and was standing in front of him. He tried to speak, he really did, but words t hat would scatter Shelby kept forming in his head.
She looked down at him in amazement. If this girl and him didn't mean something happened between them then he would have spoken up already. He would have already explained. He would have said something. Anything. But, still nothing came from the lips of the boy she loved.
Peter came over sensing a tense moment in the group known as the cliffhangers. He smiled as he approached, but his facial expressions soon changed as he saw discomfort in everyone's eyes, especially Scott's. He knew it had something to do with Shelby by the way the group was positioned around her and Scott.
David smiled to himself. Something was definitely started. His ears perked up as he saw Peter approach. He was eager to hear how Scott and everyone would explain the display of grief on their faces.
Peter knew if had nothing to do with all the cliffhangers, so as he made his way to them he said, "All right troops, go to classes. You don't want to be late the first week of school."
By then Shelby's eyes were away from Scott and tearing up. She wiped them and turned coldly against the group and started out. No one moved but Scott. He ran after her until he caught up to her.
"Please Shel, let me explain."
There was no answer from her; she just walked a little faster looking ahead. He quickened his pace to match her's.
"Shelby, really I need to talk to you. Not like this though, please look at me. Shelby?" Scott's eyes were weeping tears. He was crying more than she was.
"Please baby, don't ignore me, Shelby? You're my world. I didn't mean to hurt you. Please let me just tell you what happened."
Shelby looked away. She didn't want him to see her so upset. At that very moment she was building walls around her to protect herself. She now had more than enough reason to hold people away, to stop them from hurting her anymore. She could hear Scott's begging her. She could hear the sobs between his words of sorrow, of pure apologies. But, he doesn't matter anymore, not to Shelby. He was her main enemy at the moment; he was the last person she could shed a shield into her for. She was shaking, shaking so badly that she couldn't walk straight.
Scott noticed that she still hadn't talked or even looked up. He hurt her. He hurt her badly. He wanted to hurt for her. He wanted it so this pile of sadness and betrayal fall all on him and not on Shelby. He looked at her again, but wasn't sure if he saw what he thought he saw. He was crying so hard that he couldn't control the flow anymore but it also mad it hard to see if the tears he was shedding made it look as if Shelby was shaking or if it was really her.
He didn't have to worry about it long. All of a sudden she stopped dead. She stopped so fast Scott kept walking before his reflexes could kick in. By the time he turned around he saw her collapse and hit the ground. He rushed to her and saw she had passed out. He started screaming words; he was so out of it he didn't even know what he was saying.
Peter rushed over with Sophie. Peter picked her up and proceeded to walk back to the lodge. Sophie ran ahead and headed straight for the phone. In a matter of minutes Shelby was off to the hospital in an ambulance.
Scott sat on the ground all he could think was: I killed her, I killed her.
