Part Four:
"Sue, what's really going on?" Mike asked his daughter, whose eyes were almost swollen shut from crying. He sat on the edge of her bed back home, handing her more tissues. He looked uncomfortable. "Your mother should be home soon. Do you want to wait and talk to her?"
"I don't know, dad. I know how I feel about Sean. I just don't know why I'm so scared."
"How do you feel about him, then?"
"Dad, I think I love him."
Mike was not that surprised. He had seen this coming for some time now. And though he had literally hated all of Sue's ex-boyfriends (except for Brad, of course), he could not bring himself to hate Sean Donahue. "Sue, you've never been one to go after what you want. You've had to fight for everything. Maybe… Sean deserves a grand gesture. He's shown up for you so many times. Maybe it's your turn to show up for him."
Sue's face brightened. "Yeah! Thanks, dad."
Someone knocked on the door of Sean's house. He got up slowly. He hadn't done much for the past week, except go to school. He couldn't eat or sleep that much. He was wearing the same sweats and USC t-shirt for days. Sue wouldn't return his calls. So he had stopped trying and decided to let her figure things out for herself.
He opened the door, and he nearly jumped. Sue stood there in Lexi's red ball gown, the snowglobe in her hands.
"I heard you needed a date for the prom." Sue smiled nervously at him.
Sean was stunned. She was absolutely gorgeous, like an angel. "Sue, what—?"
"This is the dress I wore to the ball. And, I wanted more than anything for you to be the one who took me to that ball. I wished you were there with me."
"Sue, I'm here now. You are so beautiful. Where did you find the snowglobe?" He took it from her hands and wound it up, letting Winter Wonderland play in the air.
"In the garbage. I rescued it." The joy fell off of her face, replaced with guilt. "Sean, I'm sorry. I was wrong. I'm just terrified. I've never felt this way before about anyone."
"I've never felt this way before, either. But I've come to realize that it's always been you, Suzy Q."
"It has?" She smiled up at him, still standing in the doorway.
"Of course." He smiled back. "Sue Heck, may I have this dance?" Sean winded up the snowglobe again and placed it on the coffee table. He held out his hand for Sue to take.
She walked in, stepping closer to him. Sean pulled her close so that her head was resting against his chest. She wanted to stay in his arms, forever.
"Sue, would you do me the honor of being my last girlfriend, ever?"
Her legs became shaky, and she could feel her heart beating in her throat. She looked up at him.
"Did we finally get the timing right?" Sean asked. He wiped away a tear from her cheek as they looked into each other's eyes.
She leaned up to whisper softly in his ear, "Yes, Sean."
He gently held her face in his hands, and they leaned in. Their lips met, and they felt it everywhere.
The Beginning…
