She wondered upstairs, fighting back the tiredness that was slowly consuming her. The day has been a long one, and, it wasn't quite over yet. She has been invited for a nightcap by the Major, which was much needed after the events of the day.
The halls were eerily quiet, everyone was in bed (or so she thought). The lights were all turned out, leaving the corridors blackened, with only a light in an office to guide her. The office where the Major was waiting, with a glass already poured and waiting.
She opened the door, and greeted the Major with a smile, before sitting in her usual seat behind the desk, staring wearily at the glass in front of her, beside a large pile of paperwork for her to confront later.
"It's been a long day." Major Javadi remarked, taking a sip from his glass, before removing his beret and placing it on the table.
"Yes." The general replied, watching the major carefully pick up his glass and drink its contents, savouring every moment. Lena had immersed herself in the pile of paperwork that sat before her. She had tomorrow's lesson to plan. Something she wasn't looking forward to, and wish she hadn't left so late.
"Anything I can help you with?" The Major asked, feeling slightly guilty that his work was done for the day, and everyone else was in bed (or so he thought).
"Not really. Unless you want to do tomorrow's lesson?" Major Javadi leant over the desk, seeing what tomorrow's topic was. Chemistry. Not something he particularly found interesting, nor enjoyable. That, he decided was Lena's area.
"Wonder how much they know." He remarked, thinking back to earlier in the day when they had been bombarded with questions.
"We can't tell them too much. Not now anyway. Just preparing them for Titan will be enough. They know about the clo-bots."
"Yes. They do." He could see Lena was scribbling away, very nearly knocking over her glass, which had been quickly caught.
"Thank you." She said, barely coming up for air. Her head still buried in the mountain of paperwork. "Must remember to chase Stephanie for those figures."
"Ok. I'm sure she won't have forgotten." He yawned, then looked at the clock above the door. 1am.
"I'm going to head upstairs. Don't stay here too late will you?"
She didn't reply as she carried on with her work. The Major was ready to retire for the night, Lena had other ideas.
"No. I shouldn't be too much longer. I'll follow you up". She carried on working, only looking up when The Major rose to his feet,
"Ok. Make sure you do."
She barely noticed the Major head wearily towards the door, for he also had a early start.
"Night Lena." He smiled and left, quietly closing the door behind him. She looked up, albeit briefly.
"Good Night Adam" she whispered, before deciding that she too, was more than ready for bed. Leaving her work in its place, and turning off the lights, she exited her office, making sure it was firmly locked behind her. Walking up the stairs, the thought of her bed was proving ever more tempting. Not knowing what tomorrow was good to bring.
Bed, she knew, was the only place she could be truly alone, sleep was an escape. The future of World's End, was her priority.
As she yawned once more, and made her way down the corridor, making sure she didn't disturb the sleeping occupants, the attempts to stay awake were getting more desperate. Reaching her door, she opened it quietly. Pausing to gather her thoughts. Taking her hair out of the tight bun in which it had been fastened for most of the day, she opened the door further.
She was, only human after all.
