This is a project I'm working on, and it's not based on the novel/movie To Kill a Mockingbird despite the title. In fact, I've never read nor watch it. I was only looking for a good title and somehow this crossed my mind (beats Changeling, Touched or Grey Page). I'm posting this to see whether it's worth it to continue working on or not. So please R&R.
Btw, I also know that my writing and language aren't the greatest either, but I'm trying. If you have any input please do drop a review ;)
Standard disclaimer apply for characters, settings and title. You know the gist :)
Prologue
There were fire, echoes of past screams and shouts. The sky turned an unbelievable red from the fire raging through her village and the forest. The intense heat of the fire seared her skin even from a distance, as she was hidden behind broad shoulders. Her fingers were clenched painfully at the coarse fabric of his back, and her eyes were blurry from the tears and ashes. Nearby, she vaguely heard another figure shouting for her and the one sheltering her.
Then more figures poured out from the bushes and surrounded them. Both figures that seemed to be protecting her huddled closer and drew massive swords out, preparing to fight.
She couldn't understand. What had happened? What went wrong? Why must it be like this? She hadn't meant to… she had just wanted to help them, not kill her entire village.
"Get back!" the figure in front of her turned his head to face her. His face was blurred and undistinguishable by her eyes. He shouted pleadingly at her, "Run!"
She stared uncomprehendingly at him. To where? She had nowhere and nothing else left. She mentally fought the onslaught of panic that hit her. She suddenly felt lightheaded and her limbs became heavy. Tendrils of consciousness touched and pulsed with hers as her mind was cut off from her body. She recognised two pulses that shone brighter than the others and reached for them.
"I'll hold them! You bring her somewhere safe—"
The sentence was interrupted as the clash of steel against steel cut the air, followed by another and another. Then the figure in front of her turned and yanked her hand hard, Tifa felt her body following duly.
A voice whispered at her ear urgently, "Come on, Tifa. I've promised that I'd protect you."
Her eyes jerked open and the images vanished. Red wine eyes stared unblinkingly at the white ceiling. She had memorised every line and crevasse on the white washed ceiling and walls already. Her eyes turned to stare at the glass wall where the door to her small, white cell was. The sight that greeted her was one she knew well—a stranger in a body. In her body.
She had come to hate the glass wall. It only served to remind her that she knew nothing about herself. She raised a hand to block her view. It was the same hand that he had pulled at. He had said her name, hadn't he? His whisper had tickled at her ear and lurched her body to move. Somehow, his voice reached her and freed her from that state she knew so well.
"Tifa…" the name slipped from her mouth unbidden. It felt familiar and right.
She was human.
Tifa.
She was human and her name was Tifa. She once had a life somewhere, and there was someone who'd protected her...
Her name wasn't subject TL01, and she wasn't born in the laboratory and lived there her whole life. With a clarity that she hadn't felt ever since she could remember, she knew that they had lied.
I know it's short, it's still on trial :P
Anyways, review please?
