Chapter 1: Becoming a Gym Leader
I groggily walked towards the door in the gloom, as the incessant knocking continued.
"Who the hell could be at my door at this hour?" I inquired to myself as I continued.
As I opened the door, I was met by an all too familiar, all too obnoxious face. A face I had seen many times throughout my journeys. A face that I was met with at every gym I challenged. A face that still wore its trademark shades, despite it being three in the morning. A face I really wanted to punch for waking me up.
"Hey, Champ, I heard ya just beat the Kalos─"
"Do you have any sense of time? I MEAN, COME ON, IT'S THREE IN THE FREAKING MORNING! Can't a guy get some sleep?" I interjected.
The man continued on, as if scripted "League. Congrats! How's about becoming a Leader?"
Trying to regain my composure, I took a deep breath and calmly responded, "You say that every time I come back from a journey. How many times does that make it now? Six, I think? Maybe one of these days I'll take you up on that offer."
To my surprise he said something new, "If you'd like, it wouldn't be that hard to become a Leader here in Kanto."
I looked at him incredulously, "Is there anything special I'd have to do to become a Leader?"
"Well, considering that you've beaten six different Pokémon Leagues, I'm pretty sure one call is all that I need to make to get ya the gig. The changes our League is implementing would help too."
Having been away for so long, I had not kept up to date with any Kanto League changes. So I just had to ask, "And what might those changes?"
The man smiled and looked at me, "Haven't ya heard, kiddo? Now that so many new types have been discovered, the League is going to make one Gym per type and just let Champs-to-Be challenge whatever Gym they want in whatever order."
I sighed, "Man, the last League was way too easy. I don't know why, but they all seem to be getting easier as time goes on. I don't want to take part in any of that─"
"Well, look at it this way, there's no more Leagues for ya to take on right now. Why don't ya take a little break and become a Leader. Then, whenever a new one opens up, we'll find a replacement until ya make it back home."
"Hm? That doesn't sound like a bad idea, but I heard from someone that the Hoenn League might let us rechallenge its League soon. I might leave pretty soon."
"Doesn't matter, we can just say that your Gym is closed until you get back."
"You really need Leaders, don't you?"
"Not really… well sorta… yeah. I mean, we gotta employ nine new Leaders, we can't really be picky."
I laughed softly and shook my head, "Sure, why not, I've always wanted to be a Leader anyways."
The prospect of being a Gym Leader had always interested me. Although I thought it would always thought it out of my reach. I still liked the thought of helping young trainers become better and allowing someone like me to achieve their dream.
"Great I'll call up my boss, and, if he says yes, another guy'll come by later to make it official."
"Sure, whatever, can I just go back to slee─, and he's gone… whatever." I finshed, as I turned around to return to my nice warm bed to return to my slumber.
