As Yvonne sat in the front seat of her car, breathing heavily and head leaning against the steering wheel, she went over the mental checklist she had created just a few hours ago. She most likely went over it at least ten times by now, but she was a generally paranoid person, so she just wanted to make sure:
Clothing and belongings?
Hastily packed and crammed into her car's back seat, but check.
Money saved up over several years of babysitting and careful management of former occupation's checks?
Currently bulging from her right pant pocket.
Note to mom?
On the coffee table, she thought with a pang of guilt and sadness.
Octavius?
"Tweet, Tweet."
Yvonne looked to the passenger seat, half smiling at her caged cockatiel.
Don't worry, pal. This will all make sense soon. The young woman thought.
Raising her head from her former perch that was the steering wheel, Yvonne stared long and hard into her reflection created from the front window.
Her deep, brown eyes were a major contrast to her dyed milky pink hair, long and straight, reaching to around the half way point on her back. Her hair did, however, match well with her rather pale yet striking complexion. She wore a black and white stripped blouse and grey pants.
Staring deeper into her reflection, Yvonne's expression hardened.
Okay, enough stalling. This may be really scary and you have no idea what's going to happen, but you've already decided: You need to start taking action.
Reaching a shaky hand within the confines of her pocket, Yvonne pulled out a set of keys and narrowed down the small metal trinket that fit into the ignition. Finding it, she inserted the key into the slot and turned.
*Vroom*
Grasping the wheel with both hands, the pink haired young woman slowly eased herself out of her parking spot and found her way out of the apartment complex's vicinity.
Driving along the streets of Empire City, the only home she had known for all her life, Yvonne couldn't help let her nostalgic sensibilities get the best of her with all the shops and familiar fixtures that she passed.
I really am going to miss this place…
As she found her way onto the highway, staring into the seemingly infinite void of dark blue-blackness produced from the early morning sky and long stretch of highway, Yvonne couldn't help but let what felt like a limitless montage of questions barrage her:
Where am I going to live? What am I going to do for a job? Are the people there nice? Is what I'm doing really going to solve anything or is it just going to create more problems? Will mom even care that I'm gone?
Despite all these questions rushing her from every side and angle, Yvonne felt… something coming to life from within her. A feeling of finally taking control of her life, a feeling of fierce independence.
With this sensation resonating from her bones, a newfound hope filled Yvonne's being as she said with a broad smile painting her face:
"Beach City, here I come!"
