Just Beneath the Surface

The feeling seemed to emanate from deep inside her belly. It built strength until it became one all-powerful wave that threatened to sweep her up and away with its destructive force.

{WHY?!}

The wave seemed to scream as it rose quickly and clouded her chest, making it difficult to breath. It screamed with a pain that shook her very soul.

{WHY?!}

The wail rose ever higher, the pain and depression never ending. As the wave crashed over her chest, she fought to take a deep breath. Doubling over with the intense pain, she fell to her knees and then onto her right side.

{WHY?!}

Her mouth opened and closed several times yet the wave had not come that far yet and no sound issued from her lips. Her eyes blurred as the pain raced downward through her legs and feet causing a severe numbness to encompass her body. Slowly, tiny droplets of tears streamed down her cheeks falling to the ground turning the dirt to mud.

{WHY?!}

The wave of darkness and utter despair seemed to pause so she could try and catch her breath. Gasping and gulping air, she tried desperately to stop the oncoming wave, fearing she would be destroyed by its power.

{Oh, God, WHY?!}

She couldn't answer the ringing wail of her despair, couldn't give a reason as to why this happened. Slowly, and then with growing momentum, the wave raced upward, closing off her throat causing her to gasp and pant with a need for air. Hitting her full in the face, her tears rushed madly down her dirt-stained cheeks, pooling on the ground around her face and hair. Her entire body seemed to relax for a split second before it tightened with a ferocity born of a desperate need for closure and release from the pain. Arching her pain and flinging her arms wide, she turned to the heavens and opened her mouth wide, letting the wave pour forth her agony and pain.
"WHY?! OH, GOD IN HEAVEN, WHY?!"

She curled into a fetal position then, exhausted and yet not completely drained. The wave was not gone, it still lingered. It waited just beneath the surface ready to take her over at a moment's notice. Gasping and panting, she tried rubbing her eyes, tried to clear her vision just a bit. Giving that up she decided to tightly close her eyes in an effort to help calm herself. Breathing became her single-minded determination. Sniffling and gulping for what seemed like hours, she finally calmed herself just enough to push the wave of pain back down into the deep recesses of her body. Slowly, she opened her eyes. Slowly, they focused on the granite object in front of her face. Her hand reached out limply and fell onto the cool smooth surface of the granite, just below his name. Croaking, her voice hoarse from pain and crying, she whispered to the tombstone,
"Why, my love, why did you leave me?"

No answer was given to her and so she laid there, next to the headstone of her beloved one, one hand caressing the engraved name as she stared hopelessly into the horizon, seeking some redemption and salvation from the angry painful wave that was again building up strength, always just beneath the surface, waiting to engulf her in a torrent of pain and misery at his death.
"Squall......"
