Disclaimer: I do NOT own Inuyasha!

A/N: In this story they are ALL HUMANS. Kagome is the main female character, but I'm going to leave you guessing for who the male is! :-P Right now I've got it split into two parts, but I might go and change it back into one. I think that I might like it this way better, though it was originally written as only one "chapter."

If Only

Before you hear this, I want you to know and understand that though these words have forever changed my life, I think them very beautiful, and I dearly love the man who said them; I hate them with a passion I cannot begin to describe. It was because of these words, so dear to me and so hated, that I lost someone I truly loved…Although, it wasn't the words alone that made me lose him. No, it was the man that caused them to be said.

He was terrifying. Quick to violence and anger, trusted almost no one, and believe you me, he never gave warnings. His heart was as black as the darkest of nights, the deepest of oceans. He felt no pity and showed no mercy. He didn't care who or what he had to use to get you to do what he wanted, and he always knew what to use that would hurt you most.

Now to understand this fully I want you to close your eyes and imagine what it is that you love most in this world. Picture every detail…So…What would you do to protect it? Anything? Most would. However, there are those in this world who value their own skins even more, and for people like that, he would hurt what they loved or the person themselves, maybe even both…He didn't care. About anything. Until he fell in love…

The day he met her the late bell had already rung, and she was still at least five hallways from her third hour class. She was flat-out running down the hallway, her arms full of notebooks, books, pens, and papers when she ran into him. All that she had been carrying scattered everywhere, and she hurriedly bent to pick them up, not noticing who she ran into, but gushing out muted apologies all the same.

She was a mousy thing, very quiet and very shy. She had long black hair that she always kept pinned up, blue eyes between round, somewhat large glasses that had the annoying habit of trying to slide off her face, and was almost short compared to most in the school. She wasn't stunning by any stretch of the imagination, but she wasn't unattractive either. She was ordinary. Just ordinary. But he wanted her .
