Peter Pettigrew trembled under the glare of his stunning Lord, hoping he won't be cursed.
"Well?" Voldemort drawled out, patience running thin with his spy.
"They are at Godric's Hollow, my Lord." Pettigrew squeaked out, Voldemort's mouth twisted into a smirk.
"Good, thank you Wormtail, you're dismissed. I will go alone." Voldemort stood, ran a hand through his hair, then grabbed a cloak and turned to Severus. The man felt his Lord's gaze, and bowed lower, gathering as much bravery as he could.
"My Lord, I have a request if I may." Severus's voice was steady, thought he felt faint at being so bold.
"Very well, Severus." Voldemort spoke, voice gentle, soothing.
"Please, I must ask you to spare Lily Potter. She is... important to me."
Voldemort narrowed his eyes, tilting Severus's head up. Severus let his Lord into his mind, enough to prove he wasn't lying.
"Very well, as you have been so faithful I shall grant your request. What of James Potter?" The Dark Lord released Severus, and the male bowed his head once more.
"Thank you, my Lord. As for Potter, I do not like him."
"Then if there's nothing else, I will return later. Bring Narcissa and Lucius to my study before I return." Voldemort didn't wait for a response, quickly apparated away.
Severus blinked at the now-empty spot, confused. Why would Voldemort want the Malfoys here? Surely he would want to celebrate instead of doing more business? He received no answers so Severus stood up and dusted off his black robes, then left in search of the Malfoys.
At Godric's Hollow everything outside was calm, with no hint of what was about to happen to the Potter's inside the house. James and Lily were downstairs with their son Harry, playing and laughing. James made some of the toys float around Harry's head as the child giggled and tried to grab at them. Lily was off to the side, charming the broom and duster to clean the house. They felt content knowing their location was safe in the hands Peter, one of their close friends from Hogwarts. It was a good decision on James's part to suggest having Peter be their secret keeper, and tell people it was Sirius. Lily sighed, then sat next to James and took his hand in her own.
"It'll be okay, Lily. Peter wouldn't give us away." James spoke softly, though there was a part of him that said something wasn't right.
"Yeah." Lily whispered back, but a second later the alarms went off, warning them of danger. Something James had put in place just in case; he didn't think it was actually necessary. James felt dread as he was proved wrong, quickly scooping Harry up and depositing him into Lily's arms. He kissed her, before giving a gentle nudge towards the stairs.
"Go, take Harry. I'll hold him off." James spoke quickly, wand in hand, panic in his eyes.
"But -"
"Go!" James snapped, not wanting to waste anymore time, hearing steps walk toward the door.
"I love you. Be careful." Lily clutched Harry to her chest, dashing up the stairs before he could answer. The second she went up the last step, the front door splintered open and the fight began. She got to Harry's room and laid the quiet child in the crib, determined to help James.
However, she heard the Dark Lord say a spell, a body met the ground a moment later. A whimpered sob escaped her, a tear rolling down her cheek and a dark form hovered in the doorway. Lily turned around, wand tightly gripped in her hand as she dared the man to get closer.
"Hello." Voldemort grinned at her from under his hood.
"Leave." Lily snapped out.
"I don't think so, not before I get what I came for." He scowled, stepped into the nursery.
"I will not let you harm my child."
"Move woman and I will spare you." Voldemort held his wand out, ready to fight.
"Like you spared my husband?" Lily growled out, determined to not back down, to protect Harry who remained surprisingly silent behind her.
"Thrice you have defied me. You will not get a fourth." Voldemort growled, then moved closer once more. Lily raised her wand towards him. The air seemed to crackle around them with suppressed magic, licking across their skin in preparation for what was to come; a protection spell unknowingly created by Lily in hopes to save Harry. Voldemort inched closer to get a clean shot at the child. Lily mirrored his movements and Voldemort began to lose patience.
"One last chance, move or I will kill you like I did Potter."
"Never." Lily refused to give in, to let someone so evil near her child. Voldemort gave an indetectable sigh, then raised his wand towards her. She expected Avada Kedavra but was met with a completely different spell instead.
"Petrificus Totalus." Voldemort spoke softly, Lily's body slumped to the floor, useless. The protection spell, unused, fizzled into nothing.
Lily watched helplessly as Voldemort approached Harry, screaming in her head; 'No! Leave him alone! Not Harry, not my Harry!' A tear fell down her cheek, Voldemort scooped the boy into his arms. He ignored the crying woman, apparated back to the grounds of Malfoy Manor where he was currently staying.
Not pausing, he swiftly entered the Manor and goes to his study, where the Malfoys should be waiting. Along the way he spotted Severus pacing a hallway.
"Severus." Voldemort got his attention, the male paused mid stride.
"My Lord!" Severus was shocked to see him back so soon, but fumbled faintly when he noticed the baby, "Is that?"
"Yes. Go tell Dumbledore of the attack on the Potters and abduction of their child." Voldemort spoke calmly, watching as Severus swiftly bowed and disappeared.
After he resumed walking, Voldemort reached his destination and entered. He was met with Lucius and Narcissa deep in a conversation that ended as soon as the door shut.
"My Lord." They both bowed, Voldemort walked up to them. Narcissa eyed the child curiously, but remained silent.
"Rise. I have a new long-term task for both of you." Voldemort shifted the now sleeping Harry, the movement drew Lucius attention to the baby for a second.
"Of course, my Lord." Lucius felt pretty sure Voldemort was going to request they take this child in; he only hoped Narcissa won't be bothered by having a second son.
Narcissa didn't mind, rather she found it to be a good idea having a child close to Draco's age that he could play with.
"I've just returned from attacking the Potters. My original plan was to kill the child. However, I decided to have him raised instead. My task for you is to take the boy and raise him as one of your own. If he shows any signs of wanting to kill me for Dumbledore, I will not hesitate to kill him first. Raise him well." Voldemort held Harry out, let Narcissa gently take the baby from him.
"Yes, my Lord. Thank you for entrusting us with such an important task." Narcissa said softly, as she gazed down at the little boy nestled in her arms.
"Do not disappoint me. You are dismissed." They quickly left the room, only slowing their pace once they got halfway down the hall.
The two Malfoys walked in silence for a few moments, letting the situation sink in.
"What should we name him?" Narcissa questioned, receiving a raised brow from Lucius, "What? I'm not having him remain a Potter of all things." Lucius agreed with her, he knew it would be disastrous if people knew they had Potter's son.
"Very well. We will think of something. We should also do a blood adoption, so he will look like us and not them." Lucius suggested. They entered the playroom where Draco was, a House Elf nearby, whom disappeared with a pop a second later.
"I'll go get the adoption sorted, if you would look after them a moment." Narcissa laid Harry down next to Draco, leaving once Lucius nodded.
Meanwhile, Severus, Dumbledore and several members of the Order arrived at Godric's Hollow to find James and Lily. They were both petrified, but Dumbledore quickly cancelled the spell.
"James!" Lily cried out, relieved her husband wasn't dead like she thought. He enveloped her crying and trembling form with his arms, setting them on the couch. Severus stayed outside, knowing he won't be welcomed.
"Harry?" James asked, voice raw.
"I'm so sorry dear boy, Voldemort has taken him. It is unlikely he is still alive." The older wizard said, eyes full of sadness. James broke down, and cried with his wife, the others left them their privacy.
After the Potters finished crying, the loss of their son devastating, they decided to talk it through.
"Let's move, to where Voldemort has not reached, and start again." James suggested, his eyes were bloodshot and puffy.
"James are you sure? What about Sirius and Remus?" Lily asked, startled.
"They can visit us, under a strict oath to not give away our location. What do you think, Lily, we can have another child. Somewhere there is no war, take all of our stuff and go. Tonight. We can tell only our two friends." James insisted, he watched as Lily grew determined once more, the fire that was missing in her gaze returning.
"Yes, let's go, James, somewhere far away from here." She agreed, and they began packing, placed everything into a single expanded bag until nothing was left in the house. They were gone before the sun rose the next morning.
Once Narcissa and Lucius signed the papers and Harry took the potion, Harry Potter was technically killed that fateful night. In his place Arcturus Lucius Rigel Malfoy was born to the Malfoy family. However, during the adoption process a strange lightning bolt scar appeared on Harry's forehead. The Malfoy's couldn't figure out why or how, only assumed it was a way to mark a child that had been blood adopted.
