I have no idea what to write for my other story, so I wrote this up. Enjoy.
A Strange Time Indeed.
"Hey Joel! What the hell is this?"
Joel turned around from the shelf he was looting and cursed under his breath; Ellie was looking at a poster hung up on a wall of the bookstore they were in. It showed a grizzled man in dirty attire wielding a revolver as human like monsters with decaying faces and outstretched arms closed in on him. At the very bottom 'The Walking Dead' was displayed in bold black lettering.
"It used to be a show, back before the pandemic." Joel responded. Hoping he wouldn't have to explain.
"Okay, but why are there runners after the dude? I thought the Outbreak hit you by surprise." Ellie asked, as Joel mentally cursed.
"Those aren't runners, they're zombies, basically the same thing but slower." Joel explained steadily growing frustrated.
"Did they have clickers, or bloaters?" She inquired.
"No, those came with the pandemic." He answered.
"So what was the show about?" She asked.
"It was about a group of people trying to survive the apocalypse." Joel replied, trying to keep it as simple as possible.
"So what happened at the end?" Ellie once again asked. Wondering how people thought the apocalypse would blow over, maybe there was cure or maybe they all became immune like her.
"There wasn't an end; it just went on and on, like real life." Joel finished before cursing under his breath, realizing that this would only bring more questions. He didn't particularly like talking about this kinda subject. Too many resurfaced memories to sort through. Ellie on the other hand, only got more curious.
"So why would people watch it if it was anything like the shithole we live in?" She asked confused on why people would watch a show without an end, never mind that it was a show about killing these 'zombies' or whatever.
"The main draw of the show was that anyone could die at any time, so people watched so that they could see who died and who didn't." Joel explained. He was frustrated on how to explain a show he only watched a couple times twenty years ago to a girl who barely knew what an ice cream truck was.
"And people actually enjoyed seeing their favorite character die?" Ellie once again, inquired confused and slightly disgusted about the subject matter. Joel sighed; this girl had no shortage of questions.
"No, people enjoyed seeing their favorite characters live. Everyone got pissed off when their favorite character died." He replied.
Ellie scrunched up her eyebrows up in confusion before finally relaxing.
"Man, you lived in a strange time, Joel." She chuckled.
Joel cracked a smile. "A strange time indeed."
I hoped you guys liked it. This came to me when I was listening to the ice cream truck conversation in the suburbs of the game. If you liked it, drop a review and hopefully I can get rid of my writers block soon and get back to my other story.
Thanks for reading.
