Author's Notes: this is set after Dean has dropped Sam off for his Monday interview in the Pilot, just moments before Jessica dies.

oooOooo

Dean sat in the Impala. Waiting. Waiting for the right moment.

He'd never recovered from the moment Sammy had told him he was leaving for college. That he was leaving him.

Dad had told him that if Sam left, he was never to come back. Ever. And he hadn't. Ever.

And Dean's heart had broken in two the day he put Sammy on that bus and watch him disappear out of his life.

From that moment, his body had been an empty shell. He breathed, he ate, he hunted…but he was empty inside. And he had no idea how to deal with it.

Neither his dad nor Sammy had any idea of how he felt. He was good – skilled – at hiding his true feelings to all but himself.

Dean needed his Sammy. Needed him so badly it hurt, deep inside where the shadows lurked, waiting for the darkness of his soul to take over when the loneliness was too much to bear any longer.

He couldn't, though he wanted to, begrudge his brother his own chance at his 'apple-pie' life. He'd hoped that Sammy, once he'd tasted the artificial sweetness, would come running back to him…because after all, Sammy was Dean's 'apple-pie' happiness. Sammy was Dean's everything. His reason for living, for fighting, for staying alive.

So that's why he sat, waiting, for the right time. Waiting to go into that house and drag Sammy out, kicking and screaming if he had to…drag him back into his life and never let go, no matter what it cost him.

Dean would die for Sammy, if it ever came to that.
