An incident report filed at the Ministry of Magic

Auror responding: Rufus Scrimgeour

Nature of disturbance: A magical duel in a muggle neighborhood

Location: Little Whinging

Date: 15 June 1979

Reported by: Muggle police

Situation reported: A wizarding couple, on a date in a muggle town, attacked by Death Eaters and a dark wizard.

Person(s) involved: James and Lily Potter, 'Lord Voldemort', three unidentified 'Death Eaters'

Auror's report: I apparated on-scene the moment I was assigned the case. I arrived in the middle of a pitched battle between a 'Death Eater' and two adolescents, male and female. Two 'Death Eaters' were lying on the sidewalk, incapacitated by hexes. I ordered the group to stand down. The male adolescent, whose clothes were torn, turned towards me to obey but was immediately cursed by one of the 'Death Eaters' with the Cruciatus. The female adolescent shrieked angrily and released a salvo of hexes too quickly to track, which incapacitated the 'Death Eater' still standing. Before I could approach the couple, another individual, who identified himself as 'Lord Voldemort,' apparated in between the fallen 'Death Eaters.' There was a brief conversation, which was cut short when the two adolescents screamed 'no' and attacked. After ordering the adolescents to flee, I apparated away for reinforcements. By the time I arrived with reinforcements two minutes later, both adolescents were lying in the middle of the street and under the Cruciatus Curse. Upon seeing myself and the four aurors I had brought with me, 'Lord Voldemort' grabbed his followers and apparated away before we could put up the anti-apparition barrier. The adolescents, unconscious, were identified as James and Lily Potter by Fabian Prewett, who appeared on-scene several minutes later. Mr. Prewett brought them directly to St. Mungo's. Obliviators promptly arrived several minutes after Mr. and Mrs. Potter were taken to the hospital.

Additional Notes: Mr. and Mrs. Potter should be approached as potential auror recruits. During the duel, they demonstrated advanced defensive magic and a natural aptitude for dueling.

Follow-up report: Mrs. Potter reported that the 'Death Eaters' attempted to kidnap Mr. Potter. During the attempt, he was severely injured and after the subsequent battle, was left more seriously injured than first anticipated. Mrs. Potter explained that 'Lord Voldemort' attempted to recruit the couple to join his 'Death Eaters' and the couple refused. While I was gathering reinforcements, they were subdued and 'Lord Voldemort' attempted to torture them until they agreed to follow him. Mrs. Potter performed a charm that prevented 'Lord Voldemort' from touching both her and Mr. Potter, protecting them from kidnapping until I returned with reinforcements. 'Lord Voldemort' could not be found for questioning. Mrs. Potter could not identify the 'Death Eaters' present. No charges will be pressed. The actions of Mr. and Mrs. Potter have been declared self-defense.

Author's note: I hope you enjoyed! This is my take on what happened the first time Lily and James defied Voldemort and an experiment in non-standard forms of storytelling. The next installment, of three, will be coming along in a few weeks. Leave a review below with your thoughts!
