:-[ Children learn to smile from their parents

^Shinichi Suzuki ]-:

It felt like a lifetime that my beloved had been in labor, but it had only been several minutes.

Several agonizing minutes of her uttered shrieks now mixing with the familiar sound that was like metal being shredded apart. I knew birth was painful, but the procedure for my wife seemed way over the line. How it took every part of my being to not barge in and tear the physician to shreds for causing her intensely unnecessary pain. But I had to keep reminding myself that this was the only way to ensure a successful delivery.

Another scream rang out: high, jagged, and piercing, almost inhuman in pitch and volume. The likes of which I pray to never hear again.

Then, a silence profound followed….

It ended with the hiccuping wail of a newborn child. The age-old fanfare that announced the arrival of a new person into the world.

After a few moments the physician exits the room, a congratulatory smile on his face. I nodded slightly as I went to enter the room. My wife didn't notice my entrance, for she was deeply lost in the bundle that she cradled in her arms. I stood only a few feet away for a moment, simply watching them.

The air was also filled with the scent of blood even though any traces have been disposed of. My throat still burned but the scent was… vulgar, never thought a day would come when blood would be unappealing to me. There is also another familiar unique fragrance, no doubt the infant's. It balanced right on the line between the scent of the most beautiful perfume and the scent of the most delicious food. There was enough of the sweet vampire scent to keep the human part from being overwhelming.

Sure of myself, I moved closer and sat next to them. As I settled on the edge of the bed my wife looked up at me, smiling warmly as she whispered the name. The one she had chosen if the child was a girl.

Great disappointment filled me.

From the beginning I personally felt that a child would only be nothing more than a mere, intolerable weakness that could be used against me. That seemed even more possible now with said child being a female. I had high expectation for a son as my heir at least. But of course I never gave voice to these thoughts.

My wife offered the child to me. I honestly didn't want to, but felt that I had to. I simply held my hands out and accepted her, holding her at arms lengths as I looked her over.

Instantly I became stunned.

Her little perfectly round head was covered with blonde fluff- dirty blonde to be exact. Her creamy ivory skin was pale, though flamed with a soft rose undertone. But what really captured me was her eyes; a pair of all too familiar liquid amethyst orbs looking back at me with a gaze more focused than any newborn creature's gaze should be.

Of course she inherits the eyes of the one person I most despise.

I smiled, and let out a light laugh. In return, the child's lips pulled to form a deliberate smile. Without thinking I brought her closer and pressed my lips against her forehead. It was like kissing an open flame for her skin was the opposite temperature of my ice cold stone flesh.

I now fully cradled the child against my chest.

A new feeling washed over me. No adequate words could fully describe it. It was as if… my heart had been taken from me in the most sacrificial and loving way possible to now reside within this child.

My child...

My daughter...

BRIEF WORD FROM THE AUTHOR

Okay so before anyone says anything, yes that's a Vampire Diaries book cover. Haha, I hope you guys enjoyed the prelude and are looking forward for more. And I know Twilight is dead but this story has been in the works way back when I was in high school, good god saying that makes me feel old. And this story has been posted and taken down numerous times in the past so I figured since I outgrew that phase give one more last permanent shot.

As always, stay awesome and I'll see you in the next chapter!:)
