The great blowy thing that moved Appa's hair was strong today, bringing the cold white thing with it. Appa's hair blew over his eyes, and he had to shake it away every few minutes. The great blowy thing was cold, even with all his hair. Appa snorted and lay on the soft, cold white thing, hoping to hold in as much heat as he could.

After a while he saw Momo crawling out from behind a nearby mound, shivering aggressively. Appa gave a low cry, and Momo turned. Seeing him, Momo ran over and buried himself in the thick hair around Appa's neck, snuggling in as deep as he could. Appa grunted again and closed his eyes. He imagined the boy…A-a-n-g, the other humans called him…he wondered when he would be back. It had been several suns since he'd gone. Appa thought back to the moment: 'I'll be back soon' Aang had said. This was not soon. This was much more than soon. Appa roared and closed his eyes, holding Aang's image until he fell asleep, shaking to fend off the cold.

Momo awoke a few hours later, stirred by the loss of warmth. Appa's hair had kept him snug, yet now it was as cold as the surrounding snow. He crawled over Appa's neck and dangled down to look. Appa's eyes were closed. He must be sleeping. Momo pulled at his eyelids, as he did when he wanted to annoy the beast. But there was no response. He carried on this way for several minutes before giving up. He jumped down to touch Appa's mouth, and noticed no breath came from his great mouth. Momo walked around him, shivering again, and saw his sides were still.

Momo sat with his friend for another hour, hoping he would wake up, before he too drifted off, closing his eyes one final time.
