Glittering Snow
Disclaimer: Wolf tower and all the characters belong to Tanith Lee and I don't own anything except for the mild plot twist to this little ending.
A/N: I wrote this because I was reading Wolf Tower and I couldn't stand that Claidi left him in this scene. I was so upset that I couldn't finish the rest of the book until I wrote this. I wrote it before I finished the book, mind you. Think of it as just a little exercise in writing or something like that.
At the agreed time, I stood in the snow by the white ball that had been a tree.
Argul came toward me over the white. It was miraculous, just watching him.
As he reached me and saw my face, his altered darkly, closing in. I opened my mouth to tell him my decision, then closed it as I couldn't seem to form the words that I felt I had to say. He stood there, silently waiting for me to speak.
Glittering light caught my eyes and I followed the glint to his hand which was nervously shifting something in it. The glitter seemed to trigger something within me and my mind changed instantly.
"Argul," I finally said and his eyes began to study my face. "I wasn't going to stay, even though I wanted to. I was going to tell you I was going with Nemian, but my heart tells me that my place is with you."
Argul hesitated, taking a moment to understand what I meant. Soon a giant smile broke onto his face and he pulled me into his arms. My stomach began to flutter with excitement, when, suddenly, he let go of me and dropped to his knees in the wet snow.
"Claidi," he said almost breathlessly. "I want to ask you one more thing." He showed me the object that he had in his hand. I gasped at the sight of a golden ring with a glittering diamond atop. I had only seen rings like that in the jewelry room of the House when I was a slave.
"Will you agree to be my wife?" Argul asked me. I was speechless, but I managed to nod my head. His smile grew even wider and his hands reached out to grab mine.
"Yes!" I finally managed to say as Argul began to slip the rind on my finger. We stared at it for a moment when Argul took my hand and pulled me down into the snow with him. I didn't even mind the cold as he pressed his mouth against mine.
