Howling at the Moon

"Nala, are you sure you want to do this?" the doctor asked me as he stared at the screen. On it was an enlarged drawing that I had found in the archives. It was an old Rusty drawing of a half-wolf human. She looked mystical as her warrior pose seemed ready to leap out and catch me.
"Yes," I said and the doctor turned off the screen.

"Well then come with me," he said and I followed him through the door and into a bright hallway. We passed several doctors and nurses, and finally the doctor lead me into a room with a bed. He had me lie down as he flipped through some charts. A nurse entered the room and put a mask on me. The last thoughts that I could remember was that I felt I was suffocating. Then my sight began to fade and my mind cleared with a dark fuzziness. When I woke up, I felt no different than I had before. My mind was still foggy and the room was spinning around me.

"Hello, Nala," A voice said coming from above me. I turned my head slightly and I saw the doctor again.

"Hello, Doctor," I replied, my words coming out slurred. My vision began to sharpen and I noticed that I was still in the same room that I had entered. The whiteness of the room made everything washed out. The only thing that stood out was was a giant x-ray of my skeleton on the screen on the wall. It was rapidly changing through various different x-rays. I noticed that my skeletal structure was changed in the pictures. The screen switched to an x-ray of my hand, which showed claws coming from my fingertips. My eyes moved from the screen to my own hand. I lifted it up and saw that it was covered it rough fur. Sharp claws were actually coming out of my fingertips.

"The surge was mostly successful," the doctor said. I sat up in the bed and knocked aside the white sheets. Looking at both of my hands I saw that they were changed. I stood up and headed to the mirror to look at myself. What I saw was something that wasn't human anymore, but it wasn't quite animal. Then I realized that the doctor had said mostly.

"Mostly?" I said. "What do you mean mostly?" I looked at him and I saw that he was nervous.

"Well, Nala, there were some complications with changing your skeletal structure to fit those of an animal. It is unfortunate to tell you this, but you're stuck looking like this for the rest of your life."

My eyes opened wide when he said this. I then turned to look back at myself in the mirror. My face was almost unrecognizable, my nose and lips had been changed into the muzzle of a wolf's. I slowly nodded my head as I thought that I could learn to live with looking like this forever. There were worse things that I could be stuck looking like for forever.
