Wendy was so, so happy to be back in the normal world. She was ecstatic to see Noser, Lacey and Tyler were the people she'd left them as.

More than anything, though, she'd been happy to see him.

Wendy hadn't realized just how important the Middleman had become to her. It had been such a shock to see the parallel version of him: the half naked, cursing-like-a-sailor, greedy jerk who was so unlike her boss. When he'd told her he wanted something in exchange for his assistance, she'd forked over Tyler's diamond tennis bracelet without a second thought. She wanted to get back home, back to her Middleman.

Then he'd appeared in the portal that took her back to the real world. Wendy couldn't help herself – she threw her arms around him, needing to know he was real, that they were together again.

Surprise, surprise. He'd been slightly unprofessional and had returned the friendly gesture. Wendy could have sworn she heard him whisper "My Dubby," into her hair.

When she'd gotten back to the illegal sublet apartment, Tyler had called. Shortly after that, he'd arrived at her door and they'd hung out for a while. When Tyler had stretched out on her bed, Wendy got up, having been struck by inspiration.

It had freaked her out when what was supposed to be Tyler had ended up being the Middleman. Thankfully, her mom had called as Wendy stared at the sketch in horror. She started painting as her mother chatted, grateful for the distraction. "I am happy."

Somewhere in the back of her mind, Wendy knew the Middleman probably had a lot to do with this. Scratch that. He had everything to do with this. He'd given her so much more than a boring temp job; he'd given her something to fight for. Something to live for.

The Middleman had been creeping into her thoughts more and more lately, even when she was with Tyler.

It was so, so stupid.

Lacey had come close to having a thing with the Middleman, and Wendy couldn't do anything to betray her best friend like that…especially because she'd learned in the parallel dimension that Lacey hit pretty hard.

Besides, she had Tyler. Tyler, her totally cool boyfriend who shared her interests. Tyler, who loved his music just as much as she loved her art. Her boyfriend…

He'd given her a tennis bracelet. Maybe he didn't know her that well.

Wendy liked to think 'Sexy Boss Man' (who she did NOT have a crush on) would never give her something like that, beautiful and expensive as it was.

'I don't even know his name,' Wendy thought, staring at the painting. Did he even have a name? Somehow, she could picture his parents naming him Middleman or Boss when he was a baby. Did he have parents? Siblings? He told her so little about himself, whereas she was an open book. He knew about the problems with her mom, and about Noser and Lacey and Tyler.

There were a lot of fill-in-the-blanks when it came to Wendy's knowledge of the Middleman.

She had time. She'd get answers.
